Why does Gervonta Davis fight people from smaller weight divisions?

Abner Mares fights at 126 now, in his prime he fought at 118. Hugo Ruiz usually fights at 122, and like Mares, is somewhat faded after many wars.

Gervonta is not small for 130, in fact he has trouble making that weight as we saw on Friday

Can someone explain: if Davis is a good fighter, why isn't his management having him fight prime contenders from his own weight division, instead of faded guys from smaller weight divisions?

I think that the general public has no idea who the leading fighters are in the junior lightweight/featherweight division. Marketability and payouts in lower weight title fights isn't substantially reduced by only having one recognizable name in the fight. The marketable name will usually get 90% of the purse.

Well, Lomachenko is a high-profile leading fighter. Since Gervonta is having trouble making 130 anyway, why won't he take on Lomachenko at 135?

If you want to fight the 130lbs king then you have to fight Tank

If Tank and you both make 130lbs then nobody is a weight bully

Loma is twice the size of Tank but Tank will still kill him

Tank's predictability, recklessness and aggression will play right into Loma's hands. A late round stoppage in Loma's favor.

because floyd mayweather is a carnival barker who knows the rubes are so easy to swindle. so easy in fact, that he can fight people who dont even box and the rubes will throw money at him for the chance to complain about it after. like trump says, i could shoot someone on 5th ave and the rubes will still love me. you get the world you deserve.

Or he could be jacked up on DOPE and take an illegal IV and get a fake TUE from a corrupt agency he paid 150K to, and they'd still buy it!

This question is always answered the same way. He is being protected to build his resume, and the last thing they want is to have their cash cow upset prior to getting the big paydays.

Uh, what are you talking about? Davis' reach is 2" longer than Loma's. He is 1.5" shorter than Loma. The two are virtually identical.

He's only 24, so the norm is to kid glove hypejobs until they are about 28 or so. Not saying Gervonta sucks, just saying he is young and developing hype.

Also, a lot of fighters drain to fight smaller guys and it is easier to do when you are that young. Bring back same day weigh ins I say. They should have to weigh in 2 days prior and on fight day. If you can't maintain the weight over 2 or 3 days, you shouldn't be fighting there, period.

Apart from their height, both of them look identical. But in reality, somehow their physical differ one to another. Tank had a hard time to maintain his weight to be in 130, while Loma is naturally a 130 and currently still can make that weight with ease.
