So does anyone have any thoughts on Murata or how good he was or wasn’t? He scored a nice draw against Pintor that many felt like Murata should have won, followed by another draw to Joltin Jeff Chandler. It has been a few years since I watched the Chandler vs Murata fights and felt like Jeff warned the decision but perhaps that is just memory and bias. I have never watched Murata vs Pintor and have that and a rewatch of the Chandler fights on my weekend watch list. Was he unlucky in fighting Pintor and Chandler? Should he have won either fight? Any thoughts on Murata? I did a search and not one single thread bearing his name comes up...the man is long overdue
This is what I wrote some time back when i watched Pintor-Murata Round 1: 10-9 Murata Round 2: 10-10 Even Round 3: 10-9 Pintor Round 4: 10-9 Murata Round 5: 10-9 Pintor Round 6: 10-9 Murata Round 7: 10-10 Even Round 8: 10-9 Pintor Round 9: 10-9 Murata Round 10: 10-10 Even Round 11: 10-9 Pintor Round 12: 10-10 Even Round 13: 10-9 Pintor Round 14: 10-9 Pintor Round 15: 10-9 Murata Total: 145-144 Pintor Guys, what a fight! I recall seeing a clip back in the day of Murata against Chandler and I though he was just a big slapping type puncher, but seeing him in this fight in its entirety I have changed my tune. More of a clubbing puncher, but what heart. I felt like an Asian judge with all my even rounds, but you'll see what I'm talking about when you see this. An ebb and flow, a give and take that you won't believe. I didn't believe Pintor was in control until the 14th round, but then Murata actually came back to win the 15th on my card. I won't be surprised if anyone has differing rounds to me because they were all so close, but enjoyable. A really good fight and I have no problem with the draw decision.
He was kind of like the Yaqui Lopez of the 118 lb. division. If he had fought worse champions, he probably would have won a World Title. But, he fought the very, very good Lupe Pintor and Jeff Chandler. Just like Lopez fought the very, very good Victor Galindez, John Conteh and Matthew Saad Muhammad.
Pretty good fight through 5 rounds so far. I wonder if Pintor was overconfident or maybe not properly warmed up? To me Murata starts strong and takes the first, convincing but not overwhelming. Pintor starts to work more effective in rds 2-3 and while I thought Murata edged both of them I can see them going the other way. Rd 4 Murata comes out strong again keeping the range where he wants it, and takes it clear for me. Rd 5 this looks like the Pintor I know and love, getting the timing and range down and scoring nice. I thought it was close but seemed to me Pintor did the stronger work. I got it 4-1 after 5...I hate interrupting a fight but unfortunately the rest has to wait till later
Amazing that he had a draw with both Lupe and Jeff. And Lupe didn't rematch him, yet Jeff proved the point in 2 rematches.
I scored the Pintor fight for Murata by 10-5 in rounds...I figure I must have missed something lol. Murata looked really good that night. I need to rescore it before I post my card as I really didn’t feel comfortable with my card. But some real close rounds and a very fan friendly fight
I had seen it a couple of years ago. It was a very fan friendly fight. I forgot at the time who I scored it for, but it was only by a couple of points. Got to watch it again soon.
The draws might have been a bit homecooked. Regardless, the fights were fairly close to the point where the draws weren't considered outrageous or anything like that. Chandler and Pintor were the two best BWs of that era and hanging with them both in fights close enough to be reasonably scored draws is pretty impressive. Murata could have been world champion in an era without such good champions.
