People point to Johnson`s bout v James Toney as some sort of proving point for both fighters but Toney looked far too green in this bout and Johnson didn`t look that good either, neither man tried to place his lead foot on the outside of the lead foot on the other guys alternative stance and neither guy tried to use glove control on the opponents lead hand if you`re orthodox you have to control the southpaws lead hand with your lead hand, was Toney green in this bout? Was Johnson overrated?
Just two good but not great Middleweight boxers in a bout that could have gone either way. Johnson being not only skilled but a Southpaw is always gonna present a problem. He could fight.
Johnson was an excellent boxer. That was a very close fight. Toney by a point is fair but could have gone either way. It was a very good fight IMO. Johnson is very, very underrated.
Didn't this bout take place about a month after Toney beat Nunn for the belt? You can see Toney was a fighting champion right outta the gate. Despite getting knocked down I had Toney up by a point. I was rooting for Reggie throughout.
Sangria, I too was rooting for Reggie and also had Toney up a point at the end. Here is my card (for what it's worth) Round 1: 10-10 Even Round 2: 10-8 Johnson (Johnson scored a knockdown) Round 3: 10-9 Johnson Round 4: 10-10 Even Round 5: 10-9 Toney Round 6: 10-9 Toney Round 7: 10-9 Johnson Round 8: 10-9 Toney Round 9: 10-9 Johnson Round 10:10-9 Toney Round 11:10-9 Toney Round 12:10-9 Toney 115-114 Toney Damn close fight
Seamus, there's no losers lament here. I'm just saying Castro didn't solve anything with Johnson. Castro was very fortunate - IMO - on getting the decision from Johnson in the rematch. I call them the way I see them. Castro was just a catcher who solved nothing in the Reggie Johnson style. But please, score the fight and I think you will see what I mean. Here is my card. Jorge Castro v Reggie Johnson II Round 1: 10-10 Even Round 2: 10-9 Johnson Round 3: 10-9 Castro Round 4: 10-9 Johnson Round 5: 10-9 Johnson Round 6: 10-9 Johnson Round 7: Missing round Round 8: 10-9 Johnson Round 9: 10-9 Castro Round 10: 10-9 Johnson Round 11: 10-9 Johnson Round 12: 10-10 Even Total (without the 7th round) 107-103 Johnson Even if we give Castro the 7th it would be 116-113 for Johnson on my card. Castro was a clubbing type of fighter whose great success was based on a rock jaw, a great hometown crowd and very accommodating judges. But Johnson's pin-point punching won it comfortably on my card.
Castro gave a Masters Class is carriage. He defused Johnson's entire game plan and inverted it to his advantage. The bull becomes the matador, the shield the foil. Next level sh*t. Truly NEXT LEVEL. 117-111
Wow, unless you're being cynical, I would say we definitely have to have this fight up for a FOTW. Those are pretty diverse scorecards between you and I.
Nice topic. Kudos for starting a good thread. However, your comments under the title, per usual, are fairly nonsensical. No, Toney was not green. He had just beaten Nunn. No, Johnson was not overrated. He almost beat Toney and did win a title at some point. Johnson might be underrated Lol at you talking about Toney not knowing the right strategy. He had an excellent trainer.
Who else had Toney`s trainer trained, I do know Toney was far better against McCallum. You must be mortified at Morlocks thinking your posting these threads since we`re the same person, he called me SaadAnt again yesterday! lol!
