Thoughts on Toney v Johnson

Just two good but not great Middleweight boxers in a bout that could have gone either way. Johnson being not only skilled but a Southpaw is always gonna present a problem. He could fight.

 

Good fight. I had Toney up by 3 points.

 

It would take Jorge Castro to really solve the Reggie Johnson puzzle.

Johnson was an excellent boxer. That was a very close fight. Toney by a point is fair but could have gone either way. It was a very good fight IMO. Johnson is very, very underrated.

Didn't this bout take place about a month after Toney beat Nunn for the belt? You can see Toney was a fighting champion right outta the gate. Despite getting knocked down I had Toney up by a point. I was rooting for Reggie throughout.

Seamus, there's no losers lament here. I'm just saying Castro didn't solve anything with Johnson. Castro was very fortunate - IMO - on getting the decision from Johnson in the rematch. I call them the way I see them. Castro was just a catcher who solved nothing in the Reggie Johnson style. But please, score the fight and I think you will see what I mean. Here is my card.

Even if we give Castro the 7th it would be 116-113 for Johnson on my card. Castro was a clubbing type of fighter whose great success was based on a rock jaw, a great hometown crowd and very accommodating judges. But Johnson's pin-point punching won it comfortably on my card.

 

Castro gave a Masters Class is carriage. He defused Johnson's entire game plan and inverted it to his advantage. The bull becomes the matador, the shield the foil. Next level sh*t. Truly NEXT LEVEL.

Wow, unless you're being cynical, I would say we definitely have to have this fight up for a FOTW. Those are pretty diverse scorecards between you and I.

However, your comments under the title, per usual, are fairly nonsensical.

No, Toney was not green. He had just beaten Nunn. No, Johnson was not overrated. He almost beat Toney and did win a title at some point. Johnson might be underrated

Lol at you talking about Toney not knowing the right strategy. He had an excellent trainer.
