No, he generally needed to land flush a couple of times. Jackson and Foster belong to the select few where the guy either went to sleep or stiffened up like he was electrocuted at the first flush punch. Jackson had ferocius power.

It's hard to say Jackson was the hardest puncher in the history of boxing. Their have been 100's of devastating power punchers in the history of the sport, some, not even ranked or heard of. (Take for instance, Jeff Simms a local guy, who cut Ali,and rocked him) but he was no more than a journeyman . Or a fighter like Galento, who was nothing more than a punching bag, but if he landed on his opponent cleanly, goodnight. Or K.Galaxy who hit like a middleweight at flyweight. I myself won't proclaim Jackson as the hardest puncher in the long history of boxing. But he definitely was one of the top punchers in history.

Very true. But Jackson had a very rare combination of power, speed and accuracy. That's what made him so deadly. His defense and chin wasn't all that, though. He also wasn't much for combinations since a single punch usually was enough.

That's kind of the stance I take as well. Though I do have to admit he's probably the hardest puncher I've seen. He had a special snap with his shots, long arms, wide shoulders, perfect pivot and torque from the hip, and they were quick too. He's not really known for fast hands and I don't really know how really fast he was, but maybe it had to do with his punching technique that made it all seem so fluid it appeared faster than perhaps it really was.

McCallum said he had the fastest hands of anyone he fought. He did hedge and say that Roy was very fast as well, but that it was harder for him to tell just how fast since he himself was much slower at that point.

I definitely can agree with the combination of the 3 attributes you named made him a very, very, dangerous dance for any fighter in the history of the sport at or close to his best fighting weight.

I wish the thread title-& some of the commenters-would specify that he may be the hardest puncher pound for pound.
Nobody at all savvy would think he could be near the hardest hitter regardless of weight-& no, if folks say "hardest in history", many will take you literally-because that is what you said.

My question is: how hard do you think Jackson hit compared to an average pro boxer at higher weights?
What weight would pro boxers have to be that, caompared to JJ, you could say he was an average puncher?
My guess is at least 40 lbs.
Would you say he hits as hard as the average pro who is 200 lbs.?
So maybe he hit like an average HW ar mid-century, but less than a typical one of today?

Yeah, I get what he means. Yet, no one ever (and I mean ever) speaks of him as having any kind of hand speed. He's quick, I guess, rather than fast, if that makes any sense. I'm not sure it does to me, to be honest.

His punches explodes out of nowhere, so he's definitely fast. What separates him from more typically fast fighters is that he doesn't throw combos. Leonard's lightning quick combos and Roy's perhaps even quicker flurries really hit home the point how fast they are,

Leonard was quicker with his punches v Kalule than Jackson was with his bombs v McCallum, Jackson`s punches were very stiff v McCallum because he was trying to KO Mike with every shot.

sometimes with Jackson. Julian being beaten up a little helped his opponent get in Julian's range where he could land his punch. Almost like a trap without really planning it. I remember the Buster Drayton knockout. And Drayton had a good chin. I do think someone like Marvin Hagler could take a clean Jackson punch, but something tells me he wouldn't be hit much with it. .

That is a great fight. I think Jackson was more proven. I think he would weather anything Mugabi threw at him and land a punch in about 3 or 4 rounds and have a highlight for his career.
