I'd take Layne in the power, infighting, and quality of wins department, wheras I take Stribling for ring generalship and longevity (his record truly is impressive, no matter how padded) In an actual fight I take Layne to beat him around the ring for a UD
I would guess David Tua beats them both and relaxes for a steak Dinner after 7 minutes of hard work! And that’s the bottom line....oh Tua wasn’t in this fight? Sorry my bad, but him and Ron Lyle must be the GOAT’s....can’t we just make a rule that Tua Lyle and Galento be mentioned in every hypothetical thread so I don’t get confused and mixed up in the future
I honestly think Layne was the smarter fighter than Stribling. Stribling was good at dodging and slipping punches, but was really bad at taking offensive oppertunities off of that, then he'd periodically rush in, and generally smother his own work. In terms of skill, and not just raw talent, I think Stribling's footwork is really the one thing that stands out.
Stribling was more talented but his best work is at light heavy. As a heavy Layne has the better wins. Layne was quality he racked up most of his losses after the Marciano fight. Stribling passed away at only 28 pretty insane he fought the number of times he did, and he lost only 1 time by stoppage. Hard to figure this fight but I would take the more proven Layne at the weight. But not with great confidence.
