He's a lot like Goofi Whitaker or Lou Savarese if we're being honest. Tim Witherspoon or Riddick Bowe would ruin him with overhand rights.
Well Joyce has achieved something tonight. He's now a WBA world title holder. Along with about 10,000 other people.
He’s a tough one to place in my opinion - harder than his limitations would suggest. He seems like he should lose to the top guys but beat the fringe ones - but I think stylistically he could beat some that he shouldn’t beat and lose to some he should. Outside of the top 3 I think his toughest challenges would be: Parker - good head movement, solid gas tank and output, and solid power. Decent chin too. All things that he could exploit against the slow Joyce. Povetkin - likewise Parker, but I think Joyce would take chances and bet his chin against povetkins power in a bid to hurt him a la Price. Pulev - is technically good enough to have an easy time of it with Joyce, but would Joyce just do his Terminator/Mummy grind down job of a guy with Pulevs lack of pop? Breazeale - pick em. Stylistically similar approach between the two. Whyte - although Whyte is far superior I think he could be bullied. Would pick Whyte but I don’t think it would be as clear cut as you would think, given that Whyte is so much better on paper. Miller - honestly I would pick Joyce. I can’t see miller having the power. I think Joyce negates miller by being taller and longer and just grinding it out. I’m not sold on millers power. Kownacki - rougher fight for Joyce. Would favour Kownacki maybe just on punch selection and durability - even though I would favour Whyte over kownacki every time. Styles make fights. Ortiz - depends. Head says Ortiz for obvious reasons, but I just don’t think he’s that good when he is physically outmatched. Would bet Ortiz but not with certainty. Joyce may just outwork and outhustle Ortiz. But those slow hands would favour a counter puncher like Ortiz.
Hes got noticeably less one shot power than Audrey, better chin though yes..But for a big unit his punches are weak, Groves explained perfectly why !
It all boils down to his chin. He is slow and ponderous and not a concussive puncher but my god he's relentless. No idea how far he can go, but any fight with him in against the top 10 is going to be worth watching. He is entertaining if nothing else I think people underestimate pressure fighters like Joyce, miller is similar a high volume puncher with a lot of strength/weight to wear guys down. It's easy to look at Joyce and think yeh most of the top 10 will out manouver/outbox him and land shots at will....but can you imagine being in the ring against this robot who just keeps coming and coming and won't let you breathe. No one will look forward to getting in the ring with this man. Would love to see Joyce Vs wilder, two really strange styles slugging it out.
He's like the British version of Breazeale, slow, clumsy but powerful and has heart. He's a bit better at controlling distance than Breazeale and keeps up a better workrate, but really he's a very crude customer and sooner or later will get stopped or outpointed.
Anyone with a bit of power and boxing skills can give him trouble. So yes even guys like Breazeale and Kownacki.
This. I think i'd favour him against Granpa Ortiz because of the latter's very old age. Right now Joyce has no chance against top 7-8 until he gets some sort of defence. Fringe top 10 maybe.
I didn't hear Groves' explanation, but the reason his punches are weak is because he doesn't know how to punch. His form is awful. He's just not very good.
He's got heavy hands by virtue of his size, but my God he's so slow and crude. He also seems to arm punch a lot of the time, which I suspect is why he's able to throw so many shots, and while that type of power can grind fighters down he needs to hit them a ton of times to begin to have an effect, and while he's doing that he's wide open to counter shots. I just can't see that style working against heavier punchers like Ortiz unless he's got a chin made of iron, and we've already seen him stopped in the amateurs by Kuzmin and another guy.
Exactly. It's obvious to see. His footwork's poor, he doesn't use his legs to generate power, and he doesn't have any real sort of hip motion. Everything comes from the upper body, arms mostly, and a little bit of shoulder rotation. He lacks explosiveness, so his punches have no snap, and his poor accuracy means he rarely hits guys flush; it's all clubbing shots thrown in relentless slow motion combinations, punctuated by slow motion jabs to the head and body and that weird side to side swaying thing he does because.....??? I hate to go in on him so harshly, as he seems like a nice bloke, but I really find his style offensive to the eye, and can't understand why people think he's going to achieve anything much in the sport. He's also not going to have a very long career if he keeps eating flush shots like he does.
That side to side thing he does is called terrible footwork. He squares up right in front of his opponent. Bad footwork, can't punch, no defense. All he's got going for him is volume, conditioning and a pretty good set of whiskers. Unfortunately, it today's HW division, that's gonna get you little ways at least, especially with a huge promotional team behind you.
Ortiz is at that stage where he could decline sharply. Stylistically I'd favour him all day, though if Joyce is able to walk through Ortiz's counter shots the way he did Stiverne's then his chances up dramatically. I doubt Ortiz can handle the pressure that Joyce brings if he can't hurt him.
