The odds are not in his favour obviously ,but does anyone believe Norton could actually see the end of 15 round s with Louis at his best ? Nortons failed against the big hitting Foreman ,Shaver's and cooney but went the distance with Ali and Holmes. Anyone actually think he's still standing with the Brown Bomber ??
No. As against all great punchers, Kenny is shaking in his boots before. Against the murderous Bomber, 1 rd KO again.
Louis was a better finisher than Holmes and a better combo puncher so there`s less chance Norton could stand and trade with an offensive specialist like Louis.
I'm of the same opinion tbh ,I'm not sure Ken gets past 4 rounds in fact .But sometimes in boxing ,it throws up surprise's ,like Morrison with Foreman ,Benn surviving against the G man ,Farr going the distance with Louis ,you get the idea .But interested to see if anyone felt that Norton could stick around for 15 ! Poor Kenny isn't getting picked against any big hitting fella ..
I at first thought maybe a 4 max but if Norton s panicked at the thought of facing Joe ,then perhaps yep he's out in 1 .
No. A blowout waiting to happen, depending on how fast Louis would want to get it over with. If Louis was having a bad night, Norton might be somewhat competitive.
Morrison vs. Foreman was only a surprise because people thought Tommy would engage & stay in the pocket & get bombed out. That he could survive & even win by fighting selectively & stay away was not shocking-any World Class fighter who does this against a non-boxer type in their forties is highly likely to win.
It’s a bad style matchup for Norton whom also had a bad track record against big punchers. I doubt anyone would pick him in this fight with confidence. Norton and Patterson are two heavies are almost universally picked to lose against big punchers in every fantasy match. I’m sure they could win some but based on history you can’t really pick them.
Well yes, that was exactly it. It was the definition of a surprise because people had every reason to think Tommy would fight like that. Going in to the fight, there was no evidence Tommy had the mental discipline to actually fight the fight he did to win. He was a slugger who was all too happy to get dragged in to a firefight even when he didn't have to. This was evident not just in the Mercer loss, but also the Hipp and Truth Williams fights leading up to the fight with George. He won, but he made life way harder than it had to be on himself with his tactics in both fights. It seemed a safe bet to assume he wouldn't be able to change his spots with Big George.
Like for example when he caught Ali in the first fight ,but Louis wouldn't allow him to get a decision win over him .He'd catch Ken as soon as Norton started feeling over confident .A below par Louis still kos him .
Joe's power and precision would force Norton to give ground or be blown out. Norton does not back up well. Louis had the arsenal to penetrate that crab defense. Louis pretty early for me.
Norton just didn't well against big punchers for whatever reason. Going in against Joe Louis, possibly the ultimate heavyweight puncher pound per pound in history ,with laser quick hands, perfect technique, and can take a opponents head off with any power punch in the dictionary. It wouldn't go well for Mr.Norton I'm afraid. Short night's work for for The Brown Bomber.
