Kid McCoy invented his own technique. I think it was called the 'Twisty Wisty Punch', or something like that...
'Nothing new under the sun'. But anyway, Emmanuel Augustus Jose Napoles Tony Canzoneri Jimmy McClarnin Sung Kil Moon Jung Koo Chang Muhammad Ali Midget Wolgast Freddie Steele Carlos Monzon All had unique styles. Tommy Ryan also scientifically developed fighting from the crouch.
Wincobank gym back in the 80's and 90's - Hamed, Herol Graham, Johnny Nelson, Ryan Rhodes etc. Defence based entirely on reflex, footwork and upper body movement, zero blocking or parrying. They also did almost exclusively body sparring and no roadwork.
No it was Kid McCoy's 'corkscrew punch', but the other guy didn't get that my original post was a joke. I guess it wasn't as funny as I thought.
I've read he also originated the dirty trick of telling an opponent his shoe is untied and hitting him when he looks down, and may be the origin of both the the phrases "The real McCoy" and "The bigger they are the harder the fall". (I've also heard the latter attributed to Jack Dempsey.)
From what I've heard, 'The Real McCoy' does originate from Kid McCoy, but I what I've read is that Kid had really uneven performances and was known for carrying opponents in the interest of gambling. Hence, spectators would wonder whether they would see 'The Real McCoy' when he stepped in the ring.
I love the idea the McCoy came from him, but it actually predates him by some time. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_real_McCoy I've heard "the bigger they are. . ." attributed to Sullivan and Fitzsimmons moreso the latter, but TBH, I'd be surprised if it wasn't older too.
