Hammer had Ortiz doing the Wilder dance at one stage. He wouldn't have survived the following assault if it was AJ..
Until this last fight with Hammer I'd have said no, Ortiz would be all wrong for Chisora and KO him. But having said that, Chisora is better than Hammer in my opinion. While I was watching the fight thinking how easy Hammer was finding a home for that right hand, I couldn't help but think how Chisora with his higher work rate, now might be a real tough fight for Ortiz. Chisora would push the pace and could simply out work Ortiz. Ortiz is more of a mid range fighter, while Chisora likes to get inside, so if Chisora can find a way in he can have a lot of success vs Ortiz. The danger of course is Chisora walks into a huge counter but Chisora is durable, maybe he could make Ortiz gas before he can be broken down. I still think Ortiz KO's Chisora but based on the Hammer performance it's far from a cake walk as clearly Ortiz has declined.
Hammer did land some hard flush shots, which didn't really hurt Ortiz but definitely got Ortiz's attention. Hammer isn't a puncher though, if Joshua ever landed that flush vs Ortiz, it would be over very quickly indeed.
No one ever ducked Ortiz unless it was because they wanted to fight someone else for more money . Ortiz himself avoided fights which is why he has the worst resume in top 10 . Hes on the decline but still a top 10 fighter. Im going to update my own rankings ,in a bit . Should be good to see where I personally place him, but hes out of my own top 5 as of now.
Did we forget Kauffman and Hammer just took Ortiz 10 rounds? Not to mention Hammer was connecting the counter right hand all night. Joshua KO1 by scary knockout against the weak chinned Ortiz. Hes finished as a top level heavyweight. H.Fury would destroy the 40 year old version of Ortiz let along Joshua.
AJ RD 3 KO (Brutally, I do mean brutally). I said New Year that Ortiz is not a top 5 and I still stand by that statement . Ortiz was considered dangerous as more of an unknown quantity and something of a potential dark horse . But his recent fights prove he is not the danger threat everyone assumes or thought he could possibly be . Hammer is an awkward and pressure fighter but someone of Ortiz's so-called danger man reputation should of dismantled and defeated Hammer within 7 rounds , ffs Tyson Fury knocked Hammer out and Fury is not even a knockout fighter . It was the Wilder Ortiz fight where I think they both got exposed as severely lacking in boxing skills and being top tier HWs. AJ would KO Ortiz (Mercer Morrison style) .
I broadly agree with you on the wholesale overrating of Orti but think you underestimate Hammer's durability and nouse. He took Povetkin the distance and although it was a dreadful fight to watch and Hammer didn't show anywhere near the ambition he did against Ortiz, he still took a very dangerous opponent the distance.
Hammer is very tough and durable, but limited, that's the reason Ortiz fought him, he's too big and slow to run or fight backwards, Hammers style is tailor-made to let Ortiz look good. Look at how Kauffman made Ortiz look B grade. Ortiz isn't going forward anywhere in the ring in a hurry with his legs at his age. First decent heavyweight he faces with decent footwork will run rings around him. Joseph Parker will knock him out in a few rounds let alone Joshua, Hughie Fury will make him look like he has concrete in his shoes.
Yeah my feeling on Ortiz hasn't really changed my theory is that, some primarily US based fans in particular have been subjected to several years of networks hyping of this fighter, watching him KO second and third rate opponents and meanwhile having various pundits singing his praises to the point that they are rating him far higher than his actual achievements merit. In part because the hw scene in the us has been poor for years now, as can be seen from the overrating of Stiverne or similar bang average fighters. Indeed, in their company Ortiz does look good... Of course, none of this applies to the illustrious US based fight fans on these boards who are all immune to such obvious hyping. I'm talking about the other, much dumber fans who never post here.
ortiz is good but at this point of his career i think hes all set. AJ beats him down. if its the ortiz from 3yrs ago its a totally differ fight.
At this stage of their careers, AJ by late stoppage but he might have to dig deep before the pensioner gasses....
If AJ is so "static and plodding as they come", then why has nobody managed to knock him out? Genuine question to the many on here who state this on a constant basis. I am presuming that they are a) Wilder Fans b) American c) Both.
AJ finishes Ortiz in Povetkin-type fashion but quicker. The 25 year (alleged) age difference is too much.
