When talking about Godfrey, you have to assume some of his fights were either fixed, or the guy was a coward. Godfrey was the All Time low blow artists. He hit Gains so hard, he dented his metal cup. He also went low while bettering Carrera in a fight where he wasn't hurting. WIthout the foul, I believe Godfrey wins the fight and its on film. I have seen it. Some think Godfrey was a top talent when not being handcuffed. As for picking between the four, I think it's close. 1 ) Jeannette in a 15 or longer round fight 2 ) Godfrey, a semi-skilled super heavyweight who can punch. 3 ) Gains, smaller but he could box 4 ) McVey. A crude slugger type, who wasn't as tough as he looked.
Jeannette v Gains could go either way.I would lean towards Jeannette especially over any distance more than 15 rds. I'd pick McVey to beat Godfrey, possibly by stoppage.
I really like Joe Jeannette so I'm prejudiced here, but from what I know I'd take Godfrey ,,in a 50/50 fight
If mcvey gets some boxing lessons he might beat godfrey but I tend to doubts it...godfrey was good and well schooled
Johnson said McVey was the toughest man he ever fought.McVey took inhuman punishment in their 3rd and last fight being stopped in the closing stages of the 20th round having gone the 20rds distance in the first two.. His classic marathon fight with Jeannette which featured multiple knockdowns of both men only ending when McVey's eyes were both shut tight after 49rds, makes talk of him being "not as tough as he looked," total nonsense. McVey fought Jeannette 5 times for a total of 99rds! When Hugh McIntosh proposed another fight [the 6th,] with McVey for Langford, Sam replied "By the Lord ain't there anybody else in Australia I can fight except that Big Smoke?" McVey and Langford faced each other 15 times for a total of 235rds Langford managed to stop McVey once! Your comment is absurd!
Oh sure, a teenager in Sam Mcvey was the toughest man Johnson fought. Get out of here. Wise up. Read the fight reports. They were easy matches for Jack Johnson. As we know there are multiple news headliners for Johnson to fight Mcvey, Jeannette, and Langford as champion, some in Australia. Jack Johnson simply was not serious in taking these offers. If he was, some of them would have happened.
The fight reports state McVey took inhuman punishment for 20 rounds ,this along with his 49 rds battle with Jeannette, indicates with absolute certainty that he was as tough as he looked! You achieve new heights of stupidity with every post! Congratulations ,that is no mean feat!lol
