I have been reading about how much time Damon Runyon spent with Dempsey and I'm curious to read some of his coverage .. any idea the best books or archives ?
My gramps who was a boxing fan met the mauler himself at his restaurant in N.Y. City. Dempsey and Louis were his favorites. He said Jack was quite a character. You'll love this story. While he was there, some much older man in a military outfit with a cane called Dempsey a draft dodger. Dempsey over heard him and decided to have a bit of fun, circling around and mock sparring with his much older and handicapped disgruntled patron. The dining stopped. The floor cleared. Everyone in the joint stood up to watch. As the old-timer was lurching forward, his cane hand slipped forward and so did he causing the handle of the cane to jar the man in the groin. Down he went. Dempsey then yelled out out some lady's name and that was the end of the entertainment. When my gramps had a chance to shake the mauler's hand, he asked what was tha name he yelled out, some sort of boxing terminology? Nah said the mauler, that was the name of my x wife. Not sure which one he was referring to. Oh, if they only had I phones back then.
