Ali was incredible, his fight IQ was amazing that`s how he beat Foreman and Frazier, his chin was amazing also, his speed was superb, his pull counter was brilliant he was an unusually fast counter puncher and very good at slipping shots.
He beat Foreman and Frazier what other heavyweight can beat that? Frazier was ranked 40th by the ring magazine in a list of the top fighters of the last 50 years in 1996 and in the same list Foreman was ranked 38th! Spinks in another heavyweight on the list and Holmes is the only top 50 (on this list) on his resume, Tyson had the same resume in terms of beating someone on this list. Marciano was also on the list and was another rare heavy to beat one of these top 50 in the form of Charles, I can`t add any other heavies to this list at all except Louis beating Schmeling.
He beat Ray once out of six, outweighing him by 15 lbs. If that is your main argument for him, he's in trouble. He had some nice wins though, I just don't think it takes him up there with the very greatest MWs.
Heavyweights? I agree about the 15lbs thing though someone mentioned that before, does that mean Ray was a welter when he fought LaMotta? I would have loved to have seen Robi fight Basilio at welter it may have been a different kind of fight maybe.
Ali was 241/2 to almost 27 yrs old during his ban .. That is the meat of a boxer's Prime, most.. Perspective needs to be used here when calling him overrated if he has a resume like that outside these years
Overrated no question. The definition of. Sometimes in discussion I feel like I need to remind some of his loyalists he didn't actually knock out Mr. Tooth Decay and no he didn't really beat Superman. That was Ken Norton and he lost. Those 3 years he missed in is in our imagination. So he didn't really fight the greatest guys during that intial reign (not his fault) (strike that it was his fault) you read a lot bout how other fellow greats wouldnt lay a glove on him. It's a stretch. We may have seen the best of him. As the OP opened with being on the list doesn't mean he wasn't great or intended as an insult.
