He is wrong, and he is also right.

He is wrong in the sense that Ali was much much better than them, and indeed migth have been able to beat Louis.

He is right in the sense that some of those fighters were just men who were in the wrong place at the wrong time.

If Louis beat you, you were just another bum of the month.

Only, it's far more likely Ali would've won.

OK, but if he doesn't, then he is just another bum!

Not really. I never remember Walcott, Charles, Conn or Schemling that. It was more used for fighters, who, well, didn't look all that skilled and weren't all that good. The better fighters he faced I don't remember being labeled that. If Ali, came up as Ali, and was as good as he looked, I doubt he'd be labeled that. Who's to say though.

Keep in mind that Ali wasn't as well regarded by many contemporary scribes as he is now. If he has the same type of career trajectory, i.e. getting dropped in one fight against a British champ and having a close fight against another contender, he would still have been considered a largely untested and unproven contender going into a fight with Louis...kind of like he was against Liston. If he were to lose against The Brown Bomber in a title challenge, scribes at the time would be inclined to dismiss him as being a run of the mill contender.

Even if he were to win, he probably wouldn't be credited as being one of the best until a while later.

    Put it this way.

Somebody would have to have been champion during that twelve year period.

Maybe Schmeling or Baer could have regained the title, and maybe not.

Walcott and Charles are not in the picture until the post war period.

Take away Louis, and you probably have three or four additional lineal champions!

Or Tony Musto or Johnny Paycheck or Turkey Thompson. Division would have been weak enough that any number of nondescript heavyweights could have seized the crowning if they were in the right place at the right time.

It's all good. I'm having my first drinky of the week.

If I ever arrive at MY heaven I'll be doing rails with Joe.
