Leonard might have stopped Tommy in the rematch had it been a 15 rounder he had Tommy in bad trouble in the 12th.

Yeah I haven't seen it in a while, some else pointed out that I was wrong there. My other three were real tho, especially LaMotta that was about 4 seconds from the end of the fight

To be fair, two of the judges would have had Cooney ahead, had it not been for point deductions and the KD he suffered earlier. Which was kind of mind-boggling.

Ahh that's what is was. I knew something I'd forgotten about that fight, I couldn't remember the point deductions. That's why I thought he was winning

Here is Tate v Weaver write-up....Tate was never the same thereafter ...and now forgotten.

1980-03-31 : Mike Weaver 207½ lbs beat John Tate 232 lbs by KO at 2:15 in round 15 of 15
    Notes
    • Tate was three inches taller and 24½ lbs heavier than Weaver.
    • Tate was a 2-1 favorite.
    • There was a crowd of 12.769.
    • Unofficial AP scorecard (through 14 rounds) - 137-132 Tate.
    • Weaver said he knew he was behind and needed a knockout to win.
    • "Finally in the fifteenth round, my manager reminded me I was telling everyone I knew that I was going to knock Tate out. He told me I was running out of time and it was now or never so you better do it! I sat in my corner and recited the 23rd Psalm to myself and asked the Lord to give me the strength to knock him out. He gave me more than I needed," said Mike Weaver in a 2016 interview with Ringside Report.
    • Weaver knocked Tate out with a left hook. Tate laid unconscious, face down and spread eagle on the canvas as he was counted out.
    • "The crowd cost Tate the fight," Weaver said afterwards. "He made the mistake of trying to come out and slug with me. He was boxing before that. He was responding to the crowd."
    • If Tate had defeated Weaver, his next opponent was expected to be Muhammad Ali.

i was referring more to the thread starters opening post as he mentioned historical fighters, which i took to mean guys who are regarded in the upper echelons of boxing i.e. Leonard v Hearns 1 for example

Without the point deductions, i think Cooney woulda been ahead though im not 100% on this. More to do with judges watching a different fight than Cooney actually being deserving of it

How much energy do we expend thinking about twelve round fights, where the loser was ahead after eight rounds?

My take on it … You can go to the cards after 12 rounds but to say the fight of 12 rounder and a 15 rounder would be the same is just not the case .. The guy down on the cards will make his move sooner than later in a 12 rounder … Not saying things would change but very well could.. perfect example is Ray Tommy 1 … SRL has to make a move earlier in a 12 rounder so to say Tommy would have won a 12 rounder just isn't necessarily the case. You just don't know
