Reinhardt, I never really thought on this before, but when i saw your post I checked out boxrec to see if there was any scores posted and there was. After 14 rounds they show the officials with scores of 66-60, 66-62 and 67-62 for Ali. Presumably Ali won rounds 13 and 14 as he had big rounds and won them 5-4 on all cards (obviously the 5 point system was in effect). So if we remove those 2 rounds from the scorecards
Ali still would have been ahead in scoring by scores of 56-52, 56-54 and 57-54 if my math is correct. Like I said, i never really thought on this before as to who was ahead at the time.

The last 15 rounder televised in the US Jorge Paez vs Calvin Grove I
Paez scores 3 KD’s in rd 15 to take a narrow MD

1988-08-04 : Jorge Paez 125¾ lbs beat Calvin Grove 125½ lbs by MD in round 15 of 15
    Notes
    • Grove knocked down three times in the 15th round.
    • First IBF title fight in Mexico.
    • Last 15-round title bout to be televised in the USA.
Edit: Paez says this was the last 15 rounder ever fought? Anyone know if that is true?

None. But, this thread has some merit as title fights were changed from 15 to 12 rounds. They were not changed from 12 to 8.

Yeah, it’s been done before but I still like to wonder what guys that excelled in the 15 round era would not be as great perhaps if they fought in the 12 rd era. Yes, I know that they would adapt differently but it still does not answer for me definitively how that would contrast....likewise I wonder what greats of the 12 round era might just be very good over 15 or what fringe greats might be thought of as great.

A similar thread has/can be done on 20 rounders and unlimited rounds.

Thanks,Years ago I was watching the fight doctor talking about the fight and he said he thought Ali was behind , that Joe was taking it to him. Which he was! Thanks for giving the actual scores, Ali won early but Joe was killing him from the 6th through the 12th, I guess these where the same judges that thought Ali beat Norton in their 3rd fight.
