I disagree. It's helpful to have that experience. And it's true that many of the elite pros were also elite talents in the ams. But in and of itself, amateur background doesn't define a fighter's potential one way or another. Most especially at Heavyweight. Too many examples to list.

Nah. Especially the HWD is a perfect example for the amateur background.

Look at a random Top 10 HW list out there.
You only have names with excellent amateur background there.

    Joshua - Olympic gold medalist
    Povetkin - Olympic gold medalist
Parker - bronze medalist at youth WC
    Wilder - Olympic bronze medalist
Ortiz - silver medalist at WCs (team) and qf. at WCs
Whyte - beat Joshua in the amateurs
Breazeale - won National Super Heavyweight championship in the US + competed at the Olympics
Pulev - won bronze at the WCs, gold at the EC
    T. Fury - bronze at the youth WCs, national champion

Yep and theres exceptions but usually crap amateurs and people with virtually no amateur pedigree usually get hyped then end up coming up short at the top level like Eubank Jr, Kudrayshov, and Anthony Yarde as soon as he steps up.

    Romanov is not being protected.

But perhaps others are being protected from him.

    LOL

Wilder got beaten up and stopped knocked down with HEADGEAR AND BIG ASS GLOVES

imagine if they fought without headgear or big gloves back then? WILDER WOULD OF BEEN KILLED

    LOL

I'm no fan of Wilder but the difference between me and you is I can handle the fact he's managed to achieve some success in his life and this is why I don't spend all day wanking over a 12 year old video of him getting knocked out in the amateurs in a pathetic and obvious attempt to numb my butthurt.

And? It holds to relevance today.
Wilder holds a belt and is making millions.
    Where is the other guy?

Evgeny should be getting a major push and getting fights with guys at least a couple levels higher than guys like Carman (no offense to Carman), who he just chopped down in a round.

I hope he gets decent fights before he's too old to make the most of the opportunity. It's ridiculous he's still as obscure a pro as he is.

Carman was highly ranked after he beat Simon Kean so it was a good fight to move Romanov up the rankings

Yeah he can't waste time, hopefully his promoter can deliver for him soon.

Sure he was an accomplished amateur with a win over Wilder a decade ago but remember he didn't compete at super heavyweight as an amateur, he competed at 91kg, so he was basically a cruiserweight.

Wilder had the frame to grow into a real heavyweight, albeit a light one, but at 6'0" and about 220lbs, Romanov might struggle when he finally does step in the ring with a true super heavyweight.

He'd shatter that fragile mandible AGAIN if Wilder's management ever put him in with Romanov again. Which of course they won't - or anybody else whose a thread to those shaky whiskers Wilder is so obviously packing.
