LHW. 1. Ezzard Charles 2. Archie Moore 3. Gene Tunney 4. Tommy Loughran 5. Michael Spinks 6. Jack O'Brian 7. John Henry Lewis 8. Maxie Rosenbloom 9. Jimmy Bivins 10. Lloyd Marshall 11. Joey Maxim 12. Billy Conn 13. Harold Johnson 14. Roy Jones Jr 15. Bob Foster 16. Tommy Gibbons 17. Saad Muhammad 18. Jimmy Slattery 19. Gus Lesnevich 20. King Levinsky
I would have a hard time finding room for Lesnevich in a top-20... much less a top-10. Also Loughran never fought Barney Ross! Otherwise a pretty decent list.
Loughran fought Ross? You mean Benny don't you. Lesnevich doesn't belong anywhere near a top ten at175lbs imo.He ducked his top contenders. Lloyd Marshall would have had him on toast, as he did Mills. In no order; Charles Tunney Moore Foster Langford Conn Loughran Spinks Greb Fitzsimmons Dillon Lewis Delaney Rosenbloom Saad Muhammad Mustapha Muhammad Muhammad Qawi Strong division
Cheers! Ive just revisited Loughrans résumé (that before was off the top of my head) and I realized that it was BENNY Ross not Barney. I like Lesnivich due to his longevity and résumé, he's like a poor mans Moore in that regard
That's quite a list. But I tend to rank people like Greb and Fitsimmons at 160. I agree Lesnivich could be subbed for Maxim or Marshall. I said it in the other threads, I prefer to think of Langford (and Barney Ross, Pacquiao and a few others) as Wildcards due to there best work being all over the place Edit: he didnt fight Barney Ross, it was Benny Ross and I just remembered it wrong
Lesnevich wouldn't give Bivins a title shot ,once champion he avoided Charles Marshall,Moore ,Yarosz,Bolden ,Chase,Booker ,Gainer,Harvey,McAvoy,Fox. Cheese champ imo . similar to Pender.
Aye he did, but he still has a good Résumé, that definitely improved his longevity which was also quite impressive
1) Ezzard Charles 2) Archie Moore 3) Michael Spinks 4) Gene Tunney 5) Bob Foster 6) Roy Jones Jr 7) Tommy Loughran 8) Maxie Rosenbloom 9) John Henry Lewis 10) Harold Johnson Very, very tough, and it's been my favourite division for years. Guys like Bivins, Marshall, Conn and Dillon could all arguably steal a place just inside the top ten as well. Just another thing to note - I have no idea what to do with Greb, as there are a number of factors which always leave me at a loss where to put him as a Light-Heavy. And because I'm too much of a pansy (and a bit strapped for time!) to put myself through the process today, I've decided to leave him out for now. Will maybe come back and amend this list once I've had time to ponder Greb's position properly.
My fav too, Greb is a difficult one, tho I tend to pit him at 160. I might revise mine (basically change Lesnivich) as well
1. Ezzard Charles 2. Archie Moore 3. Gene Tunney 4. Harry Greb 5. Michael Spinks 6. Tommy Loughran 7. Billy Conn 8. Bob Foster 9. Harold Johnson 10. Jimmy Bivins Next 10 (rough order) Roy Jones, Maxie Rosenbloom, Matthew Saad Muhammad, John Henry Lewis, Lloyd Marshall, Jack Dillan, Jack Delaney, Joey Maxim, Victor Galindez, Dwight Muhammad Qawi
You certainly have the right to only rate Greb, Fitz etc. in one weight class although they have major accomplishments in this division as well. I would just question why you are not consistent in that, by doing the same to Armstrong or SRR in multiple divisions
Its only really SRR I do that for, because he was incredibly dominate at 2 divisions I put Armstrong at just Welterweight as a ranking. Robinson was apperently better as a welterweight, but had a better body of work at Middleweight. They're probably others that I for that for as well, its because they're completely split between 147&160 for they're legacy imo
Fair enough. I just try and take each guys body of work within each division they fought at, and that gives some guys the right (for me) to rank them in multiple divisions. SRR was probably the consensus goat but there are multiple top 20 ATG’s that achieved greatness in multiple divisions. Just my $0.02
