I really hope you are right, Iam not sure either way, Iam not American so not able get a real guage on opinion. But I wouldn’t describe that as a pessimistic opinion more like the opposite, yes I said America needs a ppv superstar I’d actually say the sport in general needs it. But it’s positive the idea that the American public won’t be force fed who it should be. I hope you are right.
Exactly with the charisma it’s neutral with Spence, where as there’s a list as long as my arm of American fighters who make up for the lack of charisma by talking absolute bullocks and making themselves look stupid...and they are loud and brash with it . wilder, bronner, miller, the charlos, and then there’s the likes of tank who just haven’t got enough going on upstairs. Spence has the right balance of talent, no offensive personality(debatable), neutral charisma(if that’s even a thing I know what I mean tho lol) and media savvy to be the ppv superstar, but it seems to forced/ to strategic for me. Finding it hard to make my point, hope yous get me if not no problem
I realise I'm not the target audience but from my outside perspective it felt utterly hollow and contrived. An obvious mismatch from start to finish, it looked rather like one of those awful World cup group games where both sides will go through as long as the favourite only wins by one goal. So they play out a sterile 1:0 and everyone goes home a winner, except in that case the other team in the group and in this the fans who stumped up their cash for 12 rounds of meh.
Looking at the past cash cows or mega star we had; Ali who was a very controversial figure, handsome, and clearly above the rest. Tyson who was a very controversial figure, had an amazingly eye pleasing style, some loved him and some hated him, both passionately, and fought when boxing was at a high. Oscar De La Hoya, a handsome media darling with cross over appeal, some controversies, a very eye pleasing style and always fought the best. Mayweather who was a self-marketing genius, extremely controversial, and marketed himself as a villain everyone wanted to see lose Pacquiao had an amazing rags to riches and Cinderella story who had a lot of exciting fights and a huge country and people who backed him up. Spence, what does he have?
Probs about as good as most here expected but maybe a bit less than the promoters did? Spence is a relatively new champ. Good crowd though.
He’s doesn’t have what the others do, and that’s my point. He has no right to be, or do I want him to be, but it’s happening right now infront of our eyes, all of those you listed were rightfully the stars of their time. Spence isn’t any of those things, but neither are any other active American fighters, so he his being forced upon the people manufactured as is the safest bet the most marketable, all those you listed earned their position through all the ways you listed. Spence is being built to fill a financial void, not based on him being better than the rest(ali), an animal (Tyson), a special talent/marketing genius (maywearger), pac not American but I take your point. So Spence is the man by default.
every time i read one of your posts, the first thing i always have to ask myself is, how does this reflect on canelo. usually i can clearly see the path you took to your conclusion.
Well to be accurate Canelo is the successor PPV star in America, so the void is already filled. He's the only one who has proven to be able to sell a million PPVs. Of course he is now with DAZN, but he still remains as boxing's biggest attraction in the U.S.
Yep this reminds me of Ward-Dawson, 2 American P4P fighters, both lineal I believe and they did just over 1 mil views on HBO. Less than what GGG-Stevens did lol
cant help it. its like reading one of mvc's posts, you just have to wonder how it all ties in to floyd. posting histories have consequences, not all of us have the memory of a goldfish.
Agreed but he’s Mexican, Iam not looking for an argument here mate, your boxing knowlage probably exceeds mine but I was on about American boxers, Iam not even that bothered to be honnest but that’s my opinion anyway, Iam just not going to buy into something that Ian expected/conned to buy into. Respect
Im impressed. This ain't the 2010s and illegal streaming is killing everything, movies, PPVs, porn etc. Over 300,000 people paid $75 dollars to see 2 of boxings top guys fight not act out a scene from No Holds Barred. Some of you are just drama queens who like boxing novellas. Just watch WWE then, but nooo thats fakeeee.
Considering how awful and full of mismatches the event was, that is as sad as it is impressive. As for Spence's viability as a PPV star, the most attractive thing about Spence is that he's really, really good... If he can pull 300-350k consistently fighting other really good fighters at 147+, that's totally respectable and fine for boxing, IMO. The Crawford and Canelo fights would (will, hopefully) do more.
