I disagree, and I dont see much basis for it to be honest.

You say you think Spence is being built up (in the way you are referring to, relative to his peers, hes simply not) when hes not better than the rest of his peers (he is better than everyone except for maaaaybe Crawford, maybe. Saying hes not better than the rest of his division is an odd claim when theres only one guy that really can challenge him at the moment) and you think hes being forced upon the people (hes not) because hes a 'safe' personality.

When we take a closer look at those claims...

I fail to see exactly how Spence is being treated any different to how Thurman was treated? Or how Danny was treated? Or how Porter was treated?

    Hes not.

The idea that hes being manufactured, any more than any other prominent talent these days, seems to me to be a pretty bizarre view on his career. Him, Thurman, Porter, and Garcia are all under the same banner... and are fights hes been dying to get, and yet he is STILL waiting on Haymon to feed him one of them. He would be twice the name he is today if they would have fed Danny and Porter to him instead of making Danny vs Porter (which they could have made afterwards anyways). If he was truly being built up in a ridiculous manner, they would have fed Porter and Danny to him by now.

So I view that as being entirely baseless. Hes being treated the same way every major fighter and fighter considered the 'real deal' is treated by their promoters and managers.

Secondly. You seem to view him being 'selected' as due to his personality, or lack thereof.

In a day and age where guys like McGreggor, Mayweather and Broner make a name for themselves by being loud and brash, where gimmicks and controversy sells and many fighters are trying to copy that formula, Spence is fairly wooden, and because of that hes being selected by the establishment, because of it?

To me this seems like a position where no matter what he did, you could say the same thing. He often refuses to 'play the game' (he canceles many media obligations due to not wanting to play that game and wanting his privacy before a fight, instead of hamming it up to be the face of boxing) and refuses to add gimicks or act out for the cameras, so you think hes being force fed to us because of it. Yet if he were to pull a Broner or a Wilder, where they act a fool and add WWE style gimmicks to their personas (Broner being a fool, making headlines, hair brush gimmick) (wilder having the bomb squad yell gimmick, general wwe persona during press conferences, ect) you would simply say hes being groomed because hes playing the establishments game.

All in all I just dont see a real case to be made that Spence is being force fed to the public, or that hes being treated differently than his peers have in recent years.

Hes rising to prominence now because
    a) Hes that good
    b) His peers and former peers (Thurman, Porter, Danny, Brook) have all lost significant momentum on their own... which leaves him as one of the 'last men standing' in terms of stock and 'perceived level' by the public.

Anyways, thats just my view on it.

Ironically, I think it's easier to make the case that Spence was Haymon's last choice to develop into a star, not his first. He had the deepest stable of welters and made sure all of them but Spence got big fights amongst each other.

Errol only got the Brook job because Al didn't mind risking him to go on the road and he wanted that belt in his stable.

Errol, an Olympian, has been in that stable for 7 years. And he's had two big fights, none of which were against Al's favored stable members. The road trip for Brook and Mikey has been it. Had Mikey not lobbied intensely for the fight, we'd still be back at just Brook.

Errol should be having the easiest access to big fights given the in house names , not the hardest. These fights could have been made years ago.

It comes off more that Al won't make the fights until he's milked the rest of his stable dry fighting each other.

Once that happens and their star is faded, he'll feed them to Spence. But Errol straight got blocked in his prime by his own promoter from those big fights. He'd be a much bigger name now if he'd hadn't been.

I think it’s a good point well made thanks for the response, yes he could of fed Danny or porter to him but Spence is still far from a dead cert in the Danny fight, I think he wins but to say feed him to Spence is bit harsh on Danny, porter I agree he could have.
But would it of done the same numbers as the mikey fight? Iam not sure.
So it started him on the path to be built up to a ppv star, who would you choose next? It needs to be a big name who pulls big numbers, pac?
Why wouldn’t he call out the legit contenders, I mean no disrespect to pac at all here, why didn’t he call out Crawford?

Considering this was a mismatch, they did a good job selling it and getting 360K buy.
