Wladimir Klitschko vs Riddick Bowe - in their primes - Who wins?

Bowe had great fighting spirit when in the heat of combat, but he steered clear of fighters he thought would give him a hard time. He was also prone to complaining to the ref when things didn't go his way. He was a weird mix of a blood n' guts warrior and a total patsy.

Wlad's mentality is way underrated, I agree.

 

Box from range? No, he could plod and throw out a lazy jab from range. That ain't boxing.

So many people have this abiding impression of Bowe as this super well-rounded do anything type of heavyweight, but if you take the excitement of the first Holyfield fight out of your mind and look at the footage objectively Bowe looked really vulnerable in a number of areas. He had low ring IQ, generally terrible footwork, a very inconsistent jab, trouble closing down speedy guys who kept things on the outside and refused to engage (or only engaged on their own terms) and a tendency to lose his composure when things weren't going his way and resort to fouls.

Forget Holyfield for a minute and look at his fight with Larry Donald, a tall guy who opted to stay on the outside and box with Bowe.

Where's this world-class boxing that Bowe's supposed to have? Where's the ring cutting? The smooth transitioning to inside fighting? All I see is a clueless plodder getting frustrated and throwing sloppy overhand rights from a mile away because he can't close his man down, then getting tied up on the inside when he gets there. He only starts to engage more later in the fight when he realises that Donald has no power to hurt him. Needless to say, that won't be the case with Wlad.

I think people need to open their eyes about Bowe. His chances against Wlad are really not as good as all that.

Knocking back Holyfield with a stiff straight jab. Wlad might not even win the battle of the jabs.

He beat Donald like Wlad beat Haye , with a few differences -Donald had better foot work than Haye and he used the ring a lot more than Haye did. Donald has a much better chin than Haye. Donald lost every round and had his head jabbed off.

Wlad couldn't land a hurting shot on Haye over 12 rounds. The best shot of the fight was landed by Haye in the 12th which made Wlad hold on for dear life. Wlad held so much he was deducted a point. Why was he clinching a back foot fighter like Haye? I wouldn't give Haye a hope of seeing past 6 rounds against Bowe.

Bowe boxing Donald ears off says nothing about Wlads chances , unless you want to make the argument he loses almost every round like Donald did.

 

No , WKs jab is completely overrated. He was a clinch master , not a jab master. He turned the Pulev fight into a messy clinch fest after his legs buckled off a jab in the first round.
Beside Pulev he never beat a good jabber. Holyfield had a jab and beat some of the best jabbers of all time - Foreman , Holmes , Douglas , Tyson.

 

He beat Donald like Parker beat Fury, a fight he won by being the bigger, stronger puncher, not the better boxer. Wlad controlled Haye from start to finish. It was a masterful display of jab and distance control, light years from the sloppy aimlessness of the Bowe performance.

I brought up the Donald fight to highlight a few things:

- Bowe's effectiveness rapidly dropped off when forced to make the fight
- Bowe's ability to outbox a fast and tall jabber was pretty poor
- Bowe's inside fighting could be shut down with a rudimentary clinch

Wlad is taller than Donald, has better footwork (not flashier but better), a far greater jab, far more power and ability to land it, and is leagues stronger in the clinch, not to mention possessing a ton more ring control. All in all, Bowe is getting wrecked.

 

He's both a master jabber and a master clincher, two things alone that make him extremely difficult to beat by anyone at range.
