I think we're too hard on Adam, he's just supposed to be the straight guy in the commentary duo. The problem they have is that froch is supposed to be the one pointing out technical details, but he's rubbish. They'd be better off getting someone like malignaggi/ward until they find a good UK guy to take his place.
I think Smith is quite good as a decent, and passionate commentator. He makes mistakes but they all do. It's the so called "expert" ex boxer commentators like Balloo who are utter mince. They need to go on a boxing analysis training camp run by Paulie who is just levels above anyone else in terms of commentary/analysis.
Yeah the Yanks have it good with Bernstein and Paulie. Froch is just completely compromised as a commentator. He shills so so hard for MR that's it's hard to take anything he says seriously now, as with Nelson which is a shame as Nelson used to be very good in the Watt McCrory McGuigan days. Matt Macklin is borderline on this as well now.
Have you ever seen Froch laugh or generally not have a demeanour like he's about to go on a one way trip to self-catering in Aleppo.
100% mate. Damn forgot about Duke! McGuigan was my personal fave as a pundit. Not that any of them were but he, in particular, was not afraid to stray from the party line and gave excellent pre-fight predictions and breakdowns which were usually spot on.
I think having Andy Clarke as the expert helps imo. His cards are usually on the money and he has forgot more about boxing than Adam Smith knows.
The thing about Smith is and previous commentators they are very aware they need to create sound bites and that is what makes things come across as forced and fake.
Thought McGuigan was a brilliant pundit myself. Disappointing to hear how he's treated fighters, it's the opposite of what I'd expect from the man. But hey, that doesn't mean he wouldn't be a good pundit again. I'd like to see him back on the box calling fights. Personally I like Richie Woodhall the most. Comes across a bit boring but it's clear the man absolutely lives boxing at all levels and while he's not always right, I think he does his best to call it as he sees it.
Yeah I've been surprised by that as well re McGuigan, but like you said he was/is an excellent commentator. I always associate some bleary eyed 5 am Mayweather, Tyson or Hatton fight memory from yesteryear with that high pitched Irish accent. Yep on Woodhall, always enthusiastic and doesn't shill too much. Encyclopedic knowledge of the sport.
