I'm not blaming WIlder. It's not about him. But they are showing the fight on showtime and that extra time was pure bull****. I'm not talking about whether it had any effect on the fight or not. Just the corrupt nature of it. Look at the doctor and everyone else when they are zoomed in, they weren't doing anything but buy time. There was nothing to look at.

    Was very obvious.

I wonder who gave the order? Was it decided pre-fight that he would get help if/when in trouble? Someone standing ringside gave the doctor a little tap on the shoulder?

add that in with the Fury decision its plain as day that Wilder is a protected asset only to be disposed of when the money is right.

Thats exaxctly what it is, i heard the defenders pointing out its a new commission rule for that state and that they were well within their power to do what they did but that rule is in place to be abused to protect favoured fighters in a moment of need and on that occasions they used and abused it. Like you said no blame goes on to Deontay he was just there to fight but it was all dodgy as hell there is no 2 ways about it.

I wouldn't be surprised if we later learn that Wilder used illegal wraps or some such shenanigans and that's why he hit so hard. Just way too much shadiness around that guy, and I don't buy that he isn't complicit in some way.

This again lol. It was perfectly legal and given Wilder took a lot of big shots in that round, perfectly justifiable.

If you want to ask why Ortiz wasn't given time to recover after the 5th (I think) then that's a reasonable point worth discussing. But Wilder being given time is fine.

No, it's not fine. You should check him during the break. You've got one minute to check him, why let him go back to the centre of the ring and THEN interrupting the fight? Even Wilder was disgusted by that move and he wanted to continue.

Your second point still is pretty good and also make it clear that this was a move to save Wilder from a stoppage or further punishment. Ortiz didn't receive any extra time to recover after he was knocked down. Insane unfairness.

Yep it's definitely a rule that can be abused, I mean where was Ortiz's time out after being dropped at the end of the 5th? If the rules were being applied equally and fairly he would of gotten a time out too.

I don't think it changed the result when Wilder got the extra time out but it just goes to show why home town advantage on a card your promoter has organised can be such an advantage.

The main reason Ortiz couldn't finish off Wilder is because he is well into his fifties. 10 years ago it would have been a quick ktfo for the Cuban Warrior.

Fair play to Wilder he did well to spoil and hang on - better ring IQ than i thought he had. No way would Joshua give him chance to do that - and Wilder knows it.

They changed the rules to allow for extra time to ensure someone's eyes etc are responsive, right? So by the commission's rules, it's fine. The minute is for the corner to prep their fighter, heal wounds and discuss what went wrong. If you interrupt that time with 40 seconds of a doctor shining a light in your eye and doing checks then that's a problem in itself.

Not giving Ortiz time is a bit hypocritical of them; if you're going to do one then do both. I suppose the argument is that WIlder took sustained punishment and Ortiz took much less.

I watched McCline vs Whitaker from the 90’s-00’s and they did the same thing where they waited until the start of the next round to check Whitaker. That was in NY and shows precedent

It's definitely a rule wide open for abuse, and knowing boxing there's a good chance it was implemented with that part in mind.

As I always say, home advantage in boxing is the biggest advantage you can have in any sport.

it's a rule in NY that they can take a look at the fighter at the start of the next round. so the big issue is that if they gave wilder a check up after he got clipped then why didn't they take a look at ortiz who actually got knocked down in round 5 by a huge punch? the answer to that is al haymon taking care of his mediocre champion baby.

Was it corrupt in the DeGale/Jack fight as well or does that not fit the narrative? or the fact that it is NY policy?

Unless it's to check a cut (once dealt with by corner) or a closed up eye etc, then there is no reason to let the fighters come out for a round then call them back to a corner!! Why did they do it other than to buy Wilder time!? If the ref thinks he's ok to fight ( they should check in between rounds) as soon as that Bell rings it's on or ref stops the fight if fighter is not ok to continue! Seems this is what the time was used for and no doubt it saved Wilders ass!! Ortiz probs paid off as he never seemed to complain!!
