Yes of course it was. But Leonard probably doesn't win this fight if he won in Montreal. Montreal made Leonard a man. And those 3 wins at welter, Benitez, Duran and Hearns when all were prime outshines anything else anyone else accomplished at welter. ( Yes of course Robinson is the GOAT at welterweight, but even he doesn't have that quality of wins, but of course he had the quantity of wins against some very goods at welterweight)

 

Hearns had the wrong game plan going into that first bout with Ray. He was still green in some areas at the elite level. For example what to do when your hurt and you need to buy time. His first true mega fight against a guy who was used to the bright lights.
I think the adjustments would be more consise had Tommy gotten a shot Leonard in a normal time frame.
Would have been perfect to see a rematch at 154lbs around 1983.

 

The Hagler fight was his best win

except it wasnt really a win since he lost all but two rounds

 

with Hearns, sugar was losing the fight almost as lopsidedly as the Hagler fight except he was able to stop Tommy late

 

Dundee had a well thought out plan. move early and gradually test out Tommy's strength.

we see many exchanges as early as round four in that leonard easily withstood the barrage and returned fire

look how big leonard is around the arms and shoulders - much bigger than he was than the first Duran fight

and although outscored in the later rounds, superior strength and conditioning won the day for him

 

how can one measure this differencel?

it surely cant be done visually. not to mention the exchanges were pretty much even until Tommy got caught

 

not when referring to the latest video that was slowed showing the actual scoring blows. cuffs, blocked punches, grazes, and missed shots were rightfully noted, then disregarded

Hagler won by a wide margin

Even though losing, I still say this was Sugar's greatest all around bet performance. as Gil Clancy said "his legs and movement were incredible"

and even I must say that many times made Marvin look bad. but its scoring punches that count in a professional fight

Two pounds seemed to affect hitman. looked too thin, and not strong at all

meanwhile look at how big Sugar is on the upper arms and shoulders

IMO, Sugar was the much better conditioned fighter
