Say what you will of his era, Sullivan's peak represented the greatest gap between the Champion and the top contenders that ever existed in the division.

He would be going life and death with the likes of Chisora and Parker.

    But the bones do harden.

They were often having their face disfigured fighting half to death, sometimes all the way. I suspect they weren't too worried about hurting their hands.

When you read the reports they are full of punches to the face.

Lol right and then you realize he was casual fan. By modern standards he was primitive. If you think this is modern then I suggest you learn more about boxing.

I will assume that this whole forum is this way? A bunch of guys who want to think they know about boxing because it makes them feel like a man? 99 percent of people seem like you never watched boxing a day in your life. Or you like boxing because you enjoy seeing a man with his shirt off.

Right casual boxing fan. Give me a link that says 26 of Sullivan's opponents weren't making their pro debut. Then give me a link showing any footage of Sullivan fighting. Wait you don't have any proof of anything. You just read in a book that Sullivan was good so he must be right? Let me give you suggesting. Stop watching boxing. Find a easier sport to follow. Maybe soccer. Go to a soccer forum and then type about that. In any case casual fan you aren't worth of having me type to you anymore. See ya.

Oh boy... Time to sit down, remove our bubble gum and propeller beanies and listen to a real expert tell us about boxing.

I know who this clown is. I can tell by his posts. He came here 3 months ago ( different name ), lasted 2 weeks then he was gone .. Called everyone a casual fan, smart *** posts, bashed every pre 70's fighter just for the hell of it. I remember because I got a day boot for my posts to him. My fault, took the bait

He’s good man, you better be careful! Look at the way he ducks counter points and expertly feints and then tosses the haymaker of calling someone a casual. Man that is deadly stuff. Be on your guard this man is going places.

The fact is that if any one of us had to return to the 1880's and live that life, under those conditions, lose the precious smart phone, defecate in a hole in back of the tenement, spend your adult pastime drinking rotgut whiskey from a hose for 3 pennies, have half your children die in the first 5 years, live with serious chronic medical/dental conditions as the norm, consistently eat rotten and at best bland food (when food was to be had), have almost zero labor laws to protect you.... one could go and on.... Forget winning boxing matches, I doubt but a few fighters today, having seen modern civilization, could bear to live a week.

Do you guys think a lot of the people Sullivan knocked out were worse, better, or about the same as some of the modern day stiffs that get bowled over by hard hitting prospects? Did Sullivan effectively knock out a bunch of Jimmy Smiths?

Doesn't matter where I was to be. We'll always be friends. You and me made friends right off the bat. Don't nobody ever change that. I kindly want to put my arm around you, then I'm gonna get up out of here and leave. I love you, boy.

Lol George Foreman was a pre 70's fighter. So was Joe Frazier and I know they are great. So try again. You are a casual fan. If you think a fighter from 1880 could compete against modern skilled fighters then you don't know a thing about boxing. If you think a 180 pound "heavyweights" could beat modern sized and skilled heavyweights then you are a casual fan. So the only clown is you and these other casual fans who don't know a darn thing about boxing.
