Actually any person who knows boxing would say he would be slaughter by today's fighters. There is no footage of Sullivan that exist. But there is footage of guys who came along right after him who were suppose to be more skilled than him. These guys were primitive by today's standards. So Sullivan would be even less skilled. So even the worse boxers by modern standards would slaughter any fighter from that era.
You cannot even compare the level of competition .. Marciano fought professional boxers. The top four, even various degrees of faded were all light years better the anyone Sullivan ever fought ..
Sullivan was an astonishing icon and likely a very talented but raw fighter by today's standards .. to compare him with professionals is simply absurd. Connor McGregor had far more applicable professional experience as a boxer when he fought FM than Sullivan would have out of the gate fighting at the top level today.
Correct. I think Sullivan because he was " the first " gloved USA champion at heavyweight is overrated. If he was the 5th, people would view him differently.
Just thinking what a nice polite chap you are.I estimate you will have 80% of the classic forum on ignore by July.
This is sheer nonsense. To find an era where the best contenders in the world were not professional boxers, you would have to go back tot he 18th century, or possibly further. As for how Sullivan's opponents compare to Marciano's, maybe Marciano's were better and maybe they were not. I suspect that they were better, but Marciano's era was not the strongest itself, and Sullivan walks all over Marciano in terms of depth and longevity.
If he had been the fifth gloved champion, then we would have film of him, and completeish records of all his opponents. He might just be seen as the GOAT in that scenario!
Deontay Wilder won an Olympic medal after boxing for 1 year. And he sure as hell didn’t do it by being the quickest learner of cutey boxing technique. There’s levels to power and effective aggression.
