After having gone through yet another obsessive phase, watching my old favorites fight, I find this idea more and more interesting.

Let's say Ali right around the time he beat Zora Folley. I can only go back to Dempsey. So for now:

    Ali TKO over Dempsey, 5.
Ali TKO over Tunney, pick a round.
Ali KO over Schmeling, first three rounds, max.
"" TKO any round over Carnera and Sharkey.
"" outpoints Max Baer. Possible stoppage, but Baer could be slippery.
" " TKO Braddock, four rounds.
"" wins a contested majority decision over Louis the first fight, stops him in the rematch after getting knocked around pretty good.
"" TKO in ten over Charles.
"" TKO Jersey Joe in fifteen.
"" Outpoints Marciano the first time, stops him in the 10th for the rematch.
" " Outpoints Patterson (when Patterson first won the title)
" " Leaves Johanssen out cold in 4.
"" Stops Foreman in 8...except he'd do it dancing and making Foreman look even worse than Sonny.
"" Spinks ha -ha (both bye-bye)
    "" Outpoints Holmes.
"" Weaver and Dokes….ah, why bother. Though Weaver might have given him a little trouble, as he was somewhat Nortonesque.
" " Outpoints Witherspoon, stops Thomas and Douglass.
" " Stops Tyson in 9. Ali might get knocked down but...just watch Ali against Liston. Mike would have had one heck of a swoll up face.
    "" Outpoints Holyfield, Bowe.
"" Stops Lewis in 10...if it were Lewis this century (i.e. once he gained a left hand) I'd say Ali would have outpointed him.

I don't know how he'd contend with super-heavys like Lennox or the Klitschkos. Ali relied on his length and jab and was almost always the taller fighter.

We could refer to Ernie Terrell, who Ali humiliated.

He would be favoured to beat all of them but Holmes,Tyson, Lewis and Louis are all in with a chance of beating him as well and it’s no foregone conclusion in h2h fights against Vitali, Wlad, Bowe and Holyfield either.

Terrell was a good fighter but he not on the same level as Lewis, Bowe or the Klitschkos.

    Prime Frazier ALWAYS beats Ali!!!!!

I would also favor Louis and Marciano!

I would call Lewis & Holmes 50-50 types

I would say Tyson Wlad Vitali are live dogs

I would say Holyfield Bowe have an outside shot at an upset

Ali mucho overrated in a h2h sense

I’d pick Lewis Bowe and the Klitschko brothers over Ali but he’d definitely be problems for any heavyweight in history, I don’t think Tyson had the mentality to beat Ali simply because Ali in his prime had a chin to hard for Tyson, Lewis Bowe and the Klitschkos are IMO to big and too skilled, the only old timer I see even having a chance against Ali is joe Louis and it’s a slim chance, Rocky and Dempsey May land big early but Ali descisions them both

He doesn't necessarily beat everyone. He lost fights within his own era (albeit arguably a shade past his prime for the ones which actually mattered) so it's a stretch to say he comes out on top against all the greats from every other era. However, it's hard to rate any Heavyweight ahead of him on a head-to-head basis across the board...Virtually impossible to do so, I guess.

There haven't really been too many great or golden eras for the Heavyweights, but Ali's was one and he came out comfortably on top overall, despite the odd blemish here and there. I think the mix of styles he beat is also a reassuring factor in making him an overall favourite (as in, loses some but wins more) against just about everyone else, too. Tall spoilers, murderous punchers, quick smaller guys, durable tough guys, awkward stylists etc - he has wins at a high level against all of those kinds of fighters.

Easy to say that Ali gets overrated, but the fact remains that his win column puts that of almost every other Heavyweight champion to shame.

I'm sorry, but did you just say Ali stops Marciano in a rematch? Marciano was a monster in rematches, and had a chin of granite. How do you figure this? Perhaps a lucky cut?

It's especially interesting since you said he'd only stop Walcott in the 15th and wouldnt even stop Baer

I'd also argue that Louis rematches better than Ali

Lol Ali lost to Frazier in his prime. He lost to Norton in his prime. Ali himself has stated he knew could never beat Norton no matter when they would have fought.

Dempsey is a cruiserweight by modern standards. Max Schmeling, Jersey Joe Walcott, Marciano, Johanssen, Tunney aren't heavyweights. Ali beat Foreman by luck and refused to give him a rematch.

Ali lost to Doug Jones a 180 pound guy and got a gift win. I would say Larry Holmes would beat Ali no matter what age Ali was. Holyfiled would beat Ali. If Joe Frazier could beat Ali then so could Tyson.

Riddick Bowe in shape would probably beat Ali. Lennox Lewis could beat Ali. Hell even a in shape motivated Buster Douglas would probably beat Ali.

It always cracked me up when casual fans talk about boxing like they are experts. It also cracked me up when casual fans act like certain fighters are unbeatable.

Lol Marciano had a granite chin? Again who? 180 pound old fighters? Even then Marciano got his butt whipped by a 170 pound Ted Lowry. Not only did he get his butt whipped he almost got knocked out on numerous occasions. Rocky Marciano fans are the most clueless boxing fans alive. I wouldn't even call them fans.
