Check out Shavers I and Shaver II back to back. Larry was without question hitting significantly harder (you can tell by how many times Shavers tried to clown the big rights and combinations away, he was hurt). That said, in all those rounds Larry never knocked down Earnie...and gee, some lame fighters did.
You mention the Frazier-Holmes fight. Has anyone else ever noticed that Larry, in his titular defenses could get kind of sloppy when he was finishing? He would often miss with the right (watch the ending of the Snipes, Leon, Frazier, and others). Of course, when it landed...
Anybody who has Ali winning should just stop watching boxing. Ali himself had stated numerous times that he lost to Ken Norton all 3 times and he knew he could never beat Norton. These people who feel the need to hero worship celebrities cracks me up. They get so into these people they believe they are better than they really are.
Tbh it's been about 6/7 months since I watched it I remember scoring it a draw but was quite biased to Ali (at this point I didn't know who Norton was other than that he gave Ali a hard fight). If I went back and re scored it, I might have a different result
It could also be that Weaver and Frazier didn't present the same offensive and defensive problems that Norton presented to Holmes, and thus Holmes couldn't get off in the same manner.
I think Norton won at least ten rounds and it was a terrible decision .. Ali clearly knew he lost .. he wanted no part of Norton ever again.
Not the case, in the first minute Ali landed three jabs, Ken landed no punches, in the second minute Ali landed six jabs and Kenny landed one, in third minute Ken didn't bang Ali around for it, he didn't start his assault until the last thirty seconds with Ali landing a jab in the first thirty. In Arthur Mercante's scoring as he taught many judges and ref's a round is broken into three parts, in the 15th Ali won the first and second minutes (9 landed to one), Ken won the last third with his onslaught in the last 30 seconds. Ken gave Ali the round by taking over two thirds of it off.
So, in other words one needs a microscope, a slide rule, and a shot of tequila to give Ali this fight. Ali was outboxed, out-punched, and out-worked all night. Norton got screwed out of his legacy that night. He should of won, and then we could have been done with Ali. Foreman would have wrecked Norton and become champ again.
I don't think those jabs were landing on anything but maybe Norton's gloves. Norton was also the aggressor, he was trying to fight. The solid punches were landed by Mandingo.
You can go over the tape, Mandingo landed one punch, a jab, in the first two and a half minutes, he threw three. That's what Mercante saw feet away as the ref. and how he and the two judges at ringside scored it.
According to who? The three judges, the AP, and many viewers had it for Ali and a draw after the 14th round, the WWS group with Norton present judged it a collective draw.
1. In my opinion the clossest fight of the 3. I watched it Yesterday and i tried to be as neutral as i could. But i had Norton ahead by 1 round. Ali just did't do enough in the mid rounds. 2. In my opinion Norton won the last round. Most of the round Ali danced and jabbed holes into the air. But Norton landed some power shots and nailed Ali in his own corner in the end. 3. Norton won 5-6 rounds so clearly that there was no doubt about how to score it. On the other hand: the rounds you can possibliy score in favor for Ali were sooo close. There were so many rounds wich were so tight because both fighters had their moments. I really had to watchout not to score too many rounds even. (And because i am a little biased to Norton i gave 2 extra rounds to Ali just to compansate that). In the End i have it 145-144 Norton. (I scored it 10P mus)
