Did Mickey Ward have the greatest left hook to the body in Boxing history?

Rockabye Ruben is the first name that comes to mind.

Had Gerald McCellan not gotten hurt he may have been on that very short list. He would throw a rightcross followed by a devasting lefthook to the body.

It was great. Because Mickey was only a very good fighter and not great, people may think his hook can’t be among the best ever but it was.

 

I personally don’t think so, so many guys to choose from, Walker, Dempsey, Frazier, Cooney, Fitzsimmons, ect, ward is probably top 15 to 20 left hook

Chavez had a better left hook downstairs,
So did Barrera, Robinson, Walker, Gavalin, McClellan as well as a large amount of Mexican's.
But imo the Greatest of all is Tony Zale

 

No one can say that any one fighter had THE best anything, left hook, right cross, stamina, whatever. None of us have seen more than a tiny fraction of what's out there to see really, and we have all probably seen quite a few whose left hook to the body is at the very least equal to Ward's. He is in the discussion here only because of his HBO-friendly love affair with Arturo Gatti. No disrespect intended to him, he was a hard working, honest fighter and that's all anyone can expect of anyone, but it hardly earns him entry into the "best" of anything.

it is more accurate, honest, objective and realistic to recognize Great Fighters, Champions and Contenders equally in the running with one another with often 'little' between them. and on that understanding it is true that there are HUNDREDS of Greats in the same basic level of Excellent Fighters!

Chandler/Pintor is a pickem fight.

Pintor was very good and did have a good left hook, but several very good fighters went the distance with prime Pintor. No reason to believe prime Chandler wouldn't last the distance.

Mickey and Gerry both learned the reverse hook, as he called it, from Victor Valle.

The technique is a tap hook to the head, which raises the opponent’s elbow to expose the liver, and a snap into a hard hook to the liver.

Gerry was, I believe, a natural lefty who converted thus his true power hand was his lead hand. And Mickey sometimes switched southpaw, so maybe he was a left-hander as well.

I don’t know if anyone but Valle taught the reverse hook. He also trained Alfredo Escalera, Esteban De Jesus and Billy Costello. All of his fighters used it to some degree. Not sure how long Ward was associated with him, but that’s where he learned it.
