Split decision loss to a 15-6 fighter. Kind of reminds of you some of Leon Spinks' later efforts. Sad. I was hoping he would work his way up to that shot at Fury he wanted, since Fury seems to be taking more rebuilding fights now anyway.
Rubenstein somehow had Peter winning 79-72, completely out of touch with the other scores. He regularly comes up with cards like that nowadays. That said, it's pretty clear Peter is done. No need for him to be in with a name and get stopped in a couple of rounds.
I think Peter's career was short-circuited by bad-management, laziness/overeating, and a lack of ambition. Although Peter's management was smart to keep him busy, it seemed like he was always either fighting guys way below his level...or a Klitschko brother. It's not that beating up guys like Taurus Sykes or Gilberto Martinez is useless...it's just that pummelling low level guys doesn't force a prospect to build skills. Then, after the loss to Wlad, it was back to the cakewalk fights against Robert Hawkins and Julius Long. He eventually proved he was legit with great heart against McCline, and improved skills against James Toney, but his skills ultimately plateaued. He got progressively bulkier through the years, amid rumors of late-night eating binges in camp, and a lot of missed training sessions. When he fought VK he was an overweight bomber with little cardio and no head movement; in other word, dinner for someone as tactically brilliant as Vitali. It's been downhill since.
Well... look for the silver lining, about seven matches ago Heredia was a heavy-handed undefeated prospect. Maybe he just hit a rough patch.
Maybe got a long overdue new batch of gear from his uncle Memo, and that's what making the difference.
Heredia now has wins over two former world champions, Sam Peter and Joseph Parker. I think he has a good shot at beating Wilder.
He was 253.5 for Vitali. That was only three pounds more than for Maskaev and less than the first Toney fight. I'd say the back to back knockouts against Wlad and Helenius are what ended him.
Honestly I didn't know Peter was still fighting. Peter hasn't really been 'good' since before he was massacred by Vitali. I honestly thought he had died at the hospital after the KO to Helenious .. He is a classic example of a poor kid who lost the hunger after he upgraded to silk sheets
