The Toney of the Jirov or Holy fight versus the Jack who timed an ill-trained old man and put him into temporary retirement. Would Dempsey be able to time Toney as well as he did Willard? Does Toney pack enough power to extinguish the flame of pure nonsense... i mean, fire?

Who wins this over 12 rounds and how does it go down?

    What's your beef with Dempsey?

Seriously you can't post a single thing about the guy without throwing some piece of snark in it, even when you're starting a thread and wanting some opinions from others.

Anyway I'll say Dempsey beats his arse to give you a chance to deliver your pre-planned Dempsey put downs, wise cracks and besmirching. It's what this thread was intended for after all.

    Dempsey dominant UD.

    Could be a later stoppage.

Prime "Toledo" Dempsey over Toney....of course...what else??? At one time...Dempsey was called:"the most dangerous unarmed man in the world!!!" Come up with something different...this gets boring after a while...Thanks!!!

    Dempsey in 1. Easy work
Btw there are lots of guys like semon on this blog. Dempsey LOUIS and Marciano haters.
Coming up on 100 yrs July 4. Me I will travel 200 miles to Toledo and find the exact spot to take a picture there at exactly 3 something when the "air turned red". Can't wait. Been planned for many yrs.

Is this thread all just bait to get set up for comments about Willie Meehan?

    Dempsey ruins Toney.

I don`t know, I feel Toney would land a lot of jabs because Dempsey used to bring his head forwards as he crouched, having said that Jack was in far better condition and faster than Toney was at heavy.

Dempsey via decision. Toney tough as nails as evidenced when he was a punch drunk old man surviving Lebedev for 12 rounds.

Dempsey sharper than Jirov and as he showed against Gibbons he wasn’t just a swarmer. Toney would make it difficult for him in close, so Dempsey would be best served getting his jab working and keeping it at range. But he’d do damage in close too so Dempsey via decision in what would probably be an excellent bout.

IT is a legitimate post .. Toney proved himself against bigger and better fighters than Dempsey did .. that said I like the match up for Dempsey who was every bit as tough and mean as Toney but bigger, very fast himself and a far better puncher .. a decision in a tough fight.

There are? What kind of hatered are they spewing? Anything as bad as the derogatory remarks modern boxers must hear here on Classic all the time?

Only yesterday (in the "Vitali vs Dempsey" thread), Vitali was basically being called a coward... who would have a heart attack and shake like a dog, if it was Dempsey in the opposite corner. Do we see old-timers being attacked here in such a personal way?

Imo Dempsey's prime wasn't the 1 fight against Willard but his path of destruction that saw him KO Brennan in 6 rounds, Fulton in 1 round, Morris in 1 round, Gunboat in 2 rounds, and of course the famous Willard fight, which was supposed to be stopped in the first round.

That hungry, wolf-like state of Dempsey KOs Toney for the first time in his life. Second greatest puncher ever

Thx. I will. I have studied Dempsey for probably 57 of my 66 yrs. Thought of this trip first back in 79. Long wait. Never been to Maumee Bay but have to cousins living in Toledo. Will bring my favorite Dempsey book by Roberts a dvd for my little carrying case dvd player and hopefully read of the fight and watch it at that exact time. And hopefully close to where the ring was. Don't know yet. Must research. Got a cool Willard-Dempsey July 4, 1919 Toledo, Ohio Heavyweight Championship of the World t-shirthirt to wear that day. Way overboard? Yes! But I will have fun and the days meaning will last a lifetime. Every man must cut his own path in life. This is mine.
