Apparently this was around the time that Marciano challenged Liston to a sparring match for the derogatory things he was saying. Marciano certainly ballooned up in retirement, though he was already gaining weight during his championship reign (which i plan to do a thread on). He was around 230ish here

What do you guys think would've happened? Let's say they spar for 2-3 rounds, does Liston knock him out cold, perhaps butchers him for the rounds? Or does Marciano make Liston respect him?

Not a flattering pic of Rocky. He looks older.

Not a markedly large size disparity in this photo, though.

Nobody wins the fight against time, but certainly not a balding man with a love of italian food

6'1" vs 5'11" isn't much, in fact, 2 inch difference is almost unnoticeable from far away

Off season Liston probably weighs as much as Off-Off-Off season Marciano, he certainly wasn't the shredded warrior-king of 1952

    5'11"?
Did Marciano grow an inch or two since he's been dead? Either he wearing some big heels in that pic or maybe Liston's official height, like his reach measurements is exaggerated?

Marciano would definitely make Liston respect him especially, since knowing Liston he’d underestimate him and like many others would find out once they got in the ring with Marciano that looks can be deceiving. Walcott and Moore also completely underestimated Marciano and paid dearly for it on fight night.

I don't think Marciano's tender face would get beyond Liston's jab.

That said, I don't think Rocky feared any man.

A fair assessment for an older, out of shape Marciano

It would be my same assessment for a prime Marciano.

A wrong assessment but it's yours to make!

Marciano struggled with much more shopworn and lesser athletes, none of whom had a jab near as good or powerful as Liston's. I think Marciano would get exposed against Liston.

Shopworn, like the young up and comers Rex Layne, Roland LaStarza and Kid Matthews..... Or perhaps 32 y/o Charles, who was stated to look at his best in training for Marciano 1..........

Lesser Athletes, like Walcott, who was shredded to the bone and built like an Ox up top........ Or a lean Charles.......... Or broad shouldered LaStarza..........

Not near as good of Jabs, like Charles' and Walcott's jabs, which were masterful.................

If you think it was bad when Marciano was struggling with a top 15 heavyweight when he was blinded for half the rounds, then I surely can't imagine what you think of Liston struggling with Eddie Machen!

Yes even as old as he was, for a round at least, an old fighter can always show somewhat of his former class in sparring. Sonny would absolutely have been forced to respect Rocky. And within moments. Liston would have had his hands full. A former champion is not somebody to insult in a gym.

However, Sonny was the active fighter here. If a serious gym fight broke out between them, there is no way Rocky had the condition to maintain anything more than three minutes with a current champion. But that won’t take away from the fact Sonny would have been the one learning a hard lesson. Not Rocky. At least initially.

Prime for prime I have always favoured Rocky against Sonny. Liston was a great fighter though and better than the guys Rocky fought. You just can’t confuse Rocky for Floyd Patterson or Joe Frazier. He was better than those two.
