    Round 5

Munguía is following, jabbing at the head, missing as Hogan ducks or quickens his step in reverse. Hogan not countering much, just running circles around Munguía. Wild looping right downstairs by Munguía, a mile off. Hogan is dashing in with a lead hook, forcing Munguía to reel himself backwards and halting all his forward momentum, allowing Hogan to reset on the outside, changing directions, baiting Munguía with lazy half-jabs to draw a lead. Munguía doing well to remain composed, applying pressure, not biting on every feint. Big sweeping left hook by Munguía grazes Hogan's chin. A couple of body shots late by Munguía strung together in combination for the first time, cause Hogan to scramble free along the ropes.

    10-9 Munguía, close

    48-47 Hogan

    Round 6

Munguía is stabbing the left into Hogan's chest, keeping it rested on his lead thigh while marching him down. Hogan is swatting down with the right hand to avoid being trapped in the corner, axing it across Munguía's face and tying up. Munguía misses a jab and takes a Hogan right brushing against his left temple. Munguía is pressuring, but not stepping all the way into range. Hogan jabbing at the body and falling just short as Munguía continues to menace him across the ring. Munguía dips side to side, but is caught by a leaping Hogan right hand.

    10-9 Hogan, close

    58-56 Hogan

    Round 7

Munguía is whipping right hands over the back of Hogan as the Irish-Aussie slouches in and taps on the champion's sides, hooking with both hands while bent forward. Plenty of hard contact from the Mexican, albeit virtually naught by rabbit punches and clomps on the lumbar vertebrae. Hogan chipping away up top with jabs while quickly leaning over to his side to get beneath Munguía's jabbing & hacking altitude.

    10-9 Hogan, close

    68-65 Hogan

    Round 8

Munguía is lifting a jab and barely even snapping it out, just pushing it forth to more or less set his aim before curling a right hand up off the rear hip, crashing repeatedly into Hogan's bent left forearm. Hogan shielding himself well and using evasive movement, leaving a breadcrumb trail of stiff counter jabs for Munguía to impale himself on blundering inside. Heavy aggression from Munguía, pressuring insistently but ineffectively. Hogan blocking most of Munguía's shots and sliding his feet away quickly enough to get beyond reach of the rest. Munguía sidles up close and slaps him on the cheek with a left hook late, but that was his first connection in over a minute.

    10-9 Hogan

    78-74 Hogan

    Round 9

Munguía is walking into jab and hammering downward rights that Hogan is loading up while backing up into the ropes and twisting himself clockwise above the waist. Munguía is hurtling inside now, selling out with slapping hooks, deflected off the wrist and Hogan's right forearm. Munguía does manage to stamp a jab and right hand between Hogan's eyes as the challenger takes a moment to recover his breath, caught sleeping at his post with his arms down at mid-range. Hogan is able to dance around, moving left, slipping Munguía's jabs, and stifling him with timely jumps inside to clinch after ripping hooks into his chest.

    10-9 Hogan

    Round 10

Munguía is walking into jabs, following Hogan around with his arms hanging dully by his sides. Munguía tries clubbing Hogan above his ears with a free hand in a clinch but the ref intervenes before he can drill him with too much leverage while crowding him into the ropes. They get separation and Hogan whips out a long hook, turning Munguía's chin. Hogan is drawing back the right hand, locked & loaded, and shotgunning it up into Munguía's face before diving in, head burrowed into Munguía's ribs as the champion lays atop his back.

    10-9 Hogan

    98-92 Hogan

    Round 11

Munguía is forcing ill-advised exchanges, busting down the front door and hooking with Hogan, despite the shorter man having the quicker, more compact, and more accurate left hook. Munguía getting cracked over and over with check hooks, neck swiveling around violently. Hogan is bending his neck to roll with Munguía's sloppy chopping rights hurled from outside, then either tying him up around the waist or skittering outside behind the cover of his stiff left jab. Lead rights still dialed in for Hogan, rocks Munguía with it at one point. Munguía can't lay a hook on Hogan to save his life, just woefully bad aim.

    Round 12

Munguía is forcing the issue, clapping some hooks on the chin of a tiring Hogan. Lots of negativity from Hogan, just posing, showing the jab but not actually throwing it after getting Munguía to react to his feints. Hogan tying up constantly. Munguía is still fairly ineffective despite Hogan being a relative sitting duck now, throwing wildly and wasting a lot of energy. Very sloppy, and the ring seems to be slick enough with their mutual sweating that both slip on their rubbery legs. Hogan missing with the jab and hook now from a sideways lean. Both looking very ragged. Munguía holding & hitting.

    10-9 Munguía, close

    117-111 Hogan

Absolute boxing lesson. Absolute travesty Dennis Hogan isn't a champion right now. Absolute certainty he would be if this weren't a) in Mexico and b) promoted by GBP.

I guess Hurricane is closer to legitimately world class than I ever thought him capable of being ...or Munguía is even more of a hype job than I cautioned everyone. Maybe a little of both.

Hogan is Irish people who emigrated to Australia? Did he emigrate over there with the intention of trying to forge a pro career for himself or had he already done so long before he turned pro? Because it's the former that's liking emigrating to Japan to try and learn French lol. Australia punches well above its weight as a sporting nation but the pro boxing scene over there is very poor because 99.9% of their athletic specimens are plying their trade in various other sports. They've only got about half a dozen pros over there and one of their very best fighters, if not the best, is a freaking school teacher.

There admittedly were a few rounds I gave Hogan that could have within the boundaries of reasons gone Munguía's way...but not enough to make it any worse (for Hogan) than a draw. :nono:

I don’t know that I agree with the controversy circling the result of this fight, but I’ll also say that as someone who really likes Munguia, I was disappointed with his performance and wouldn’t have been too upset if he had lost. Hogan performed admirably and fought his best fight in his biggest fight which was very impressive. I’ll probably go back and watch it later today or tomorrow and actually score it more closely to see if there was something I missed.

There is actually quite a longstanding history of Irish boxing exports to Australia. Not sure the ins and outs as far as why or how that come about, but...not that uncommon. Hogan is part of a proud tradition of mick pugs down under.

Rounds 1-2, 4, and 8-11 are IMO pretty clear for Hogan. :nusenuse:

    Close fight but clear winner.
