Holyfield aleady looked old against Moorer in 1994, was stopped in 8 rounds by Bowe in 1995.
Lewis fought him 24 rounds in 1999 and didn't even knock him down.
John Ruiz had Holyfield in far more trouble a couple of fights later.

Joe Louis was a good boxer, even though old and hell in 1951, he's not some easy mark big lump like Michael Grant wide open to be knocked out in a round or two.
Be serious for once. Lewis would box him, yes very possibly stop him, but he'd not just going to crush him in a round or two.

Holyfield in 1999 wasn't much better than 1951 Louis, if at all.
In fact, he's be on the decline for 5 or 6 years at least and was coming off a dull and dreary 12 round decision over no-entity Vaughn Bean in 1998, and followed the Lewis fights with a 1-1-1 trilogy against John Ruiz, an ordinary heavyweight.

Then went downhill from there with several more losses and no meaningful wins (except a 2008 "robbed" performance against Valuev, where they both looked absolutely dreadful ....)

These are the facts.

1951 Joe Louis was no great shakes either but people like to hammer that point home, it seems, to simply discredit Marciano.

 

If I were to critique every fighter’s resume to that degree than basically nobody has a good resume. I could just as easily do the same with Lennox’s resume or for that matter any other past great fighter’s resume.

Tony Tucker in the 90’s wasn’t half the fighter he was in the mid 80’s, Ruddock was damaged goods when he fought Lennox after his two wars with Tyson, and Tommy Morrison wasn’t the same after being knocked out by Bent. McCall was also having legal problems and coming off a drug binge when he lost to Lewis.

Also, I seem to recall Lennox avoiding Byrd to go on to fight Kirk Johnson, who was eventually replaced by Vitali. Stylistically Johnson and Vitali were much easier matchups for Lennox than Byrd was.

 

If Charles is a middleweight, then Holyfield is a light-heavyweight ...

how on earth did Lennox Lewis not manage to even knock-down a 36/37 year old LHW in 24 rounds of boxing ??
