Holyfield didn't go down. Watch the fight again. Lane actually stopped Cooper from landing more shots. One more and Holyfield actually would've gone down.

Technically, there was no standing 8 count for this fight. Therefore, Mills Lane did help Holyfield out quite a bit by improperly administering that count. Had he not, Bert was likely to land another hard punch or two on the sagging Holyfield. I watched the fight live, and have re-watched it many times. If you watch it from the beginning, they clearly state that there is no standing eight count for this fight.

He went down. Face first into the ropes. It's clear as day.

Nope. He didn't go down. He was saved by Mills Lane.

It was the mandatory 8 count. The count that the referee gives when a fighter goes down and gets up, which has been in effect for every title fight for decades. The referee always give the 8.

    It wasn't a "standing 8 count".

But Holyfield didn't go down. What does that mean? When a fighter doesn't hit the canvas, it's ruled a standing 8 count. His glove didn't touch the canvas either. Holyfield was saved by Mills Lane, who stepped in to stop Cooper from finishing the job.

Holyfield wasn't down. This isn't amateur boxing, so no count is appropriate until something other than Holyfield's feet touch the canvas. Nothing else touched. The count (and resultant recovery) was improper.

Last time I checked, Tyson punked out of the fight with some injury excuse.
Years later a washed-up Holyfield beat him up.

Yes, credit to Journeyman Bert Cooper.
He did much better against Holyfield than Tyson ever did.

The ropes stopped him from going down so the count was called.

Had Lane not given the 8 count Cooper was just as likely to walk in to a shot and get dropped himself like what happened to him on plenty other occasions.

If the ropes hold you up then it is a knockdown.

Holyfield never fought Tyson. He fought Malik Abdul Azziz. The post prison version who fought less than 8 total rounds after 4 years away from the ring.
