Parker and Charles Martin managed to become world champions and neither would be ranked fighters in the 50’s . A prime Rex Layne could definitely pick up a vacant title today.

He wouldn't have been lost--he would have been just where he'd last been seen in the 1950s. A low-tier heavyweight champion who reached the top in a weak era.

If only Walcott and the people who followed his career live were around to see his miraculous post-career ascent to the rarified realm of the ATG Heavyweights.

Hence thanks to Marciano for giving him the ranking his abilities deserved.

Wouldn’t be the first time the ones living during the time we’re wrong about a fighters ranking.

Somebody needs to google “fifty percent of Harry” and tell Everybody that it was a piece of garbage. To read that anybody would think Hurley was nothing but a snake oil salesmen who managed to con people into accepting a powder puff punching, glass jawed fighter as a legit contender.

But it dosnt wash. Mathews was already 67-3 before Jack Hurley took him on. If it really was Hurley that disguised the glass jaw and powder puff punching How did Mathews get to 67-3 on his own, and without the magical jive of Hurly? According to that piece Jack taught men to take a punch better, hit harder...absolute hogwash. The guy was a good agent and publicist. But Harry was already a 67-3 fighter who couldn’t fight..yeah right!

You are one of the thickest most obnoxious unable and unwilling to learn a thing posters i have ever seen on here. Most love a good debate but you are an absolute monster Chok.

You want to know why Charles gets far more traction as a light heavyweight than Patterson? You somehow cannot work out why Charles is considered a far greater light heavyweight than he is a heavyweight yet Patterson is the opposite??

It's literally unbelievable that this would have to be explained to someone on a BOXING FORUM in the CLASSIC section of all places.

Lets start with the lesser reasons -

Floyd fought around (technically) and made light heavy for 3 years.
Ezzard fought around (technically) and made light heavy for 7 1/2 years.
Patterson had about 25 fights where he himself was technically a light heavy.
    Ezzard had about 48.

Now lets get to the meat of the matter.

Floyd has pretty much zero big wins at the weight.

    Charles has -

    Overlin x 2
    Moore x 3
    Marshall x 2
    Smith x 2

Whilst weighing under 175 himself he also has wins over guys like Bivins x 2, Maxim x 2, Ray and countless others. Charles beat Maxim either side of Maxim winning the 175 world title and beat him easily.

Let this be the end of your silly charade of Charles and Patterson at 175.

Floyd beat the current lightheavyweight champion to become heavyweight champion didn’t he? When Marciano beats Moore everyone says he only beat a lightheavyweight.

But When Floyd beats Moore he becomes the heavyweight champion!

Ezzard has a huge resume. Of course he is too good a fighter not to have beaten champions from other weight classes. The fact of the matter is Charles was beating heavyweights from 1946.

He was the best lightheavyweight in the heavyweight division but he was still in that division from 1946.

Before 1946 Charles had not won a professional fight for three years.

He did it by fighting a procession of nobodies .When Hurley took him over he told him,
"you can't fight Im going to teach you how".
"Because the men he had fought were for the most part West Coast nobodies, his fights drew poorly, his purses were small and he had fallen into debt."
"you have proven you are a failure,I have proven myself a successful fight manager.I'm a going concern if you make it through me ,its me making it.I'm going to teach you how to fight, and publicize you and manouver you into making matches that will make big money for both of us,you don't know how lucky you are."Jack Hurley

He made Mathews a better boxer,he also carefully selected opponents.
"I made sure he didn't fight any great fighters",he would say later," I picked them mostly by their styles, guys that had styles just right for Mathews.I always picked guys that really wanted to get in there and fight and lick my fellow and while they were doing this my fighter was counterpunching them and looking great."
Hurley spent $6000 sending Mathews press clippings to sports editors all over the country,he named him
"The Athlete," in short he hyped him to the skies.

Hurley told Mathews to crowd Marciano to not give him any leverage to get his looping swings home, and to counter with uppercuts.

"In the first Mathews gave Marciano a boxing lesson.Moving in close and standing toe to toe with Rocky he eluded his bombs countered effectively with his left and even opened a small cut around Marciano's left eye"

"he started faster than I expected. .He's got a good jab and he wanted to fight" He's stronger than I thought too ,he wanted to fight" Marciano.

" Hey this guys not running. He's standing right in front of you.Go out there and stand still." Charley Goldman between the 1st and 2nd rds.
" I could see the guy was trying to counterpunch Rocky to death so I told him to start jabbing and follow through with the jab and try and catch him with the left hook." Goldman after the fight.

The second round began very much like the first with Mathews boxing expertly and in command. Then he made his fatal mistake .
Hurley had cautioned Mathews not to be afraid and pull back, which would put him in danger of getting in the way of one of Marciano's long range bombs.Yet that is precisely what Mathews did .
Years later Hurley would maintain that Mathews became frightened when he suddenly realized he was fighting in front of a big crowd in New York." Mathews wasn't beaten by Marciano,he was beaten by Yankee Stadium"Hurley.
Perhaps he was overawed ,perhaps he froze whatever the reason Mathews definitely pulled away from Marciano and Rocky had his opening, and the chance to carry out Goldman's strategy, calling for the use of the left jab and the left hook. He had shaken Mathews with an overhand right moments earlier. Now with Mathews retreating he threw an almost playful left jab that sent his rival back even further. He followed with two crunching left hooks Boom,Boom!
Mathews looked like a limp rag doll as he fell in his own corner directly in front of Hurley.
After the referee counted Mathews out a jubilant Goldman shouted over and over again in the ring,"I knew he'd fool him with that left jab, I knew he'd fool him!"
"Hurley wanted to be a Svengali, but the strings broke".Al Weill.
by the time they got to the dressing room Hurley was steaming ,he screamed at Mathews "an amateur, you fought like an amateur!" After he had calmed down Hurley told reporters." he pulled back three times and each time he got nailed,I gave him the opportunity and he just didn't make it.No alibis, no excuses,he just went amateur on me." Marciano was happy he felt he had redeemed himself after the Savold fight where he had been booed out of the ring.

You exposed yourself as a deliberate liar on this thread.
Saying Charles didnt fight for 3 years and that during that time he was in the Army .Making the statement once could just be ignorance, [after bragging about how you had studied Charles'career closely,] not admitting the mistake after being presented with facts and trying to spin it becomes just deliberate out and out lying!
