I don't need to comfort myself ,I have my faults ,but Im not ,and never have been a liar.
I never suggested Charles was better in any period, I just supplied some excellent wins he scored over top men during those years.

I think a roided up Layne destroys arreola. Lol I’d rather not speak ill of some of these guys...they put their heads on the line for peanuts most of their careers so I’ll keep quiet about some guys.
I just wish some of today’s heavies would take as much interest in their craft as Archie Moore.

What’s the beef in here with some denouncing HW wins over blown up LHWs? Some of the greatest HW fighters ever are blown up LHWs. No shame there. Ironically they're trying to denounce a man who fought on average men who were consistently heavier then him. How much did on average did Liston our weigh his opponents? Ali? Louis? Made careers out of beating up little guys. It’s the HW division that’s what makes it fun no set weights avouve a certain amount if someone was once a lighter fighter who cares?

    Cheers for that.

I often wondered how things would have panned out for Martin if it wasn't for the detached retina.

Whilst he did KO Liston I don't like his chances against Frazier at all. If you're a naturally smaller guy (as Martin was) you aren't beating Joe in my view. Liston had the big left jab and hook but was very slow and gassed badly in that fight, two things that Frazier wasn't and wouldn't do. But full credit to Martin as he endured a lot, climbed off the floor, bloodied Liston and the KO was scary.

Forget fighting the Frazier's and Ali's but fights with Quarry and Chuvalo and rematches with Bonavena and Ellis would have been interesting for Martin in my view.

I agree, Frazier was all wrong for him.

We aren't talking about a roided Layne we are assessing him as he actually was, a basic slugger with poor defence and a soft belly.

I didn't mention that that was a badly faded Liston that faced Martin as you well know. He was much like the late period Louis by that stage, still formidable, decent skills, good left hand but had totally lost the explosiveness that was their trademarks by that stage.

The 1962 Liston destroys Martin without a shadow of a doubt. Still Martin was a really good fighter and a puncher whose KO percentages are a bit misleading when you consider who he beat and the size he was when he achieved it. A really interesting fighter for mine.
