Was Holyfield really a religious nut? Or was he just playing the media all along?

I've always wondered how much of 'well first of all I just wanna thank God...' was really just an act. Lately though I am a bit more convinced it was completely for show

Specifically, after the Mercer fight in particular, Holyfield was dropping his Jesus references, and I detected a slight smirk on his face..
I wasn't sure because it was a bit subtle, but he went into another Jesus tirade at the end of the post fight interview and again seemed to smirking at the commentator after bringing up the power of the Lord that he had on his side

He certainly went forth and spread his seed upon the land, as instructed.

    He was a religious man.

    Just flawed.

    Like everyone else.

He was probably quite typical of the place and culture he came from.
Georgia is a "bible belt" state with strong Evangelical influence.
I think mentioning and crediting Jesus is probably fairly standard for a great many people there.
I think being seen to be a Christian, preaching a bit and supporting the churches is considered respectable and proper for men in that community.
Whether it is correct to class him or others like him as "religious nut" is relative.
I think it's more of a cultural thing.

I think Holyfield knew his Jesus references in post-fight interviews annoyed his interviewers, hence the smirking.

You say that as though it weren't redundant, or like the former ought to be considered a virtue (to give the statement the intended sense of duality). :dunno

Great interview! Non believers and Jesus haters never understand where the extra effort needed comes from when bone tired, depleted and nothingleft. Your faith can climb mountains.

No, he's saying it as though it were redundant and so not noteworthy. (That is, the mere affirmation of the premise that he's flawed does not negate the proposition that he's religious.)

I believe that he was a nut. Hate to be so judgmental but Holyfield's eyes tell me a lot. Whether he was religious or not, who knows.

Holyfield got really preachy with religion after Moorer 1. It turned a lot of people off to him especially after he had several kids out of wedlock.
