Who would everyone else have gone with? I usually have a tricky time narrowing these down to 5, and am always curious to hear dissenting views. This content is protected
Personally my choices would be. 1. Thomas Hearns 2. Tony Sibson 3. Bobby Boogaloo Watts II 4. Alan Minter 5. Juan Domingo Roldan Now it may be seem strange that I have left out the Duran and Mugabi fights but I’ve gone down the route that I’ve picked the notable fights in that these were the fights that really showcased Marvin’s talents at their best to me. The Duran fight may well be one of the most notable in its importance to Hagler’s career and the boxing world, in that it was his first ‘Superfight’ against a fellow ATG but personally I didn’t think the over cautious performance against Duran was one of his best. Same with the Mugabi fight which to me, he got involved in far too many unnecessary exchanges with the big hitting Mugabi.
1. Hearns - Made him a superstar. 2. Duran - Despite the disappointing result of having to go the distance, this was Hagler's first superfight. Can't be omitted from the list . 3. Hart- Hagler had graduated to Philly by this time, but had stumbled out of the blocks the first two times out. One more loss to a Philly middleweight and he could be relegated to an also-ran and forgotten altogether. He HAD to win this one. 4. Sibson- This one sort of represents a high-water mark for Marvin, where people say he looked his very best. 5. Minter. He gored the man in front of his home crowd, finally annexing the title.
Beautifully stated but i believe Hart is the man you are looking for at 3. By the time Hagler fought Watts again he had drawn controversially with Antuofermo and was well on his way. He'd also beaten Monroe twice by then as well as Briscoe.
Mugabi had better be on this. Crazy slugfest with a 25-0 25 KOs contender. Solidified him as a great champion My list would be 1. Hearns 2. Minter 3. Duran 4. Mugabi 5. Monroe 2
Just have to change it in the post now. I completely agree with all of your picks. Sibson would be the closest to interchangeable for me but looking deeper there's no-one i'd swap him with. That win emphatically underlined that Hagler was on a different level to any other middleweight on the planet and the complete dominance of a good opponent had many singing his superlatives.
The Mugabi fight of all things solidified him as a great champion??? Ehhhhmmmm...... Guess it's a good thing he squeezed that one in.
