Was Carnera's knockout of Sharkey legit?

  1. "Definitely! At least there 's no real basis to believe otherwise."

  2. "I'm really not sure...maybe?"

  3. "No, it seems like a dive to me."

The affirmative is a definite, while the “no” isn’t.

Meaning whoever made the poll invites an obvious bias towards the no answer.

There is nothing wrong with the maybe option.

The problem is voting yes leaves no room for error. If you’re 99.9% sure it was a fair KO, then the yes wouldn’t be a suitable option.

If you’re 51% sure that it wasn’t a real KO, then the “no” would be.

A fairer set of answers would probably consist of:

    Definitely a KO
    Probably a KO
    Not Sure
    Probably not a KO
    Definitely not a KO

90% of heavyweight boxing between Dempsey and Frazier should be discounted. The sport only really began in consistent believability somewhere in the latter 1960's.... Much of what occurred in the 20th century was on par with pro wrestling. That is one reason why we are truly in the Golden Age.

True JT, you can't really say because of the angle, and I agree it's tough. Let me ask you, do you think that it kind looks like it could be the forearm or do you not see that as a possibility at all?

If you consider the sport consistently believable since the late 1960s , I have a bridge to sell you.

Impact could have potentially been forearm, wrist or fist. Any angle but this would show it up i reckon.

Going frame by frame, and stopping at what appears to be the point of impact, it looks like Carnera's gloved hand was making at least some contact with Sharkey's head as he was bent over, after guessing incorrectly that Primo would fire an overhand right. Continung frame by frame, you can see Carnera's right arm corkscrew across his body, indicating that he turned into the punch and got power behind it. Plus, Sharkey had been wobbled badly previously earlier in the round and had been tagged by an uppercut as well in Carnera's followup attack, indicating he was open to the punch.

With all that in mind, I'm inclined to think the KO was legit.

Yeah, no scientist would design a survey question that way but I'm not sure he meant anything tendentious by it. We all word things poorly sometimes.
I'd prefer a multiple-choice range of likelihoods, from from "highly likely" to "highly unlikely".

Look at his rear leg as well. He thrusts into the punch.

I've never thought Primo didn't think he was a top duty puncher. "I poonch them they go boom"!
"go away George, I don't want to hurt you".
