JMM is one of my favorite fighters of the last 15 or so yrs. This guy was so versatile in my book. Beautiful counter puncher ..punch placement ring generalship..high IQ he was a total package for me. Probably the last guy I really liked alot.
    Overshadowed by Morales and Barerra.
My opinion hes better than Morales though not as popular and pretty even with Barerra.
    What are your thoughts.

No he doesn't get overlooked .. but his brother does .. The better boxer for the first 10 years. And I agree with your quote

He does not get overlooked he is a good fighter and solid, but he sort of fought good guys a few times and Manny many times, but then fought a lot of lesser guys. He was good, but I never saw him as a real ATG.. But if people do that is fine.. The Manny fights are his ticket to the Hall of Fame.

I always felt he had ATG skill set. I've seen him do things that other greats havent been able to do.

I've been thinking of writing something about the lightweight kings of the late 90's-mid 2000's. Floyd, Pac, Marquez, Barerra and Morales. Marquez does get overlooked despite his epics with Pac. He just didn't have quite the personality of the others make him that cross over star. In the ring though, there are few I'd rather watch.

I think he did at one time and Barrera and Morales were seen as better, but I think that has shifted over the past few years. I think JMM gets his just due....although on this forum only HW’s get major play anyway.

We should have a classic and HW classic forum separated so I can avoid the sludge threads on Marciano Baer Carnera Tua Shaver Lyle Cleveland over and over again

Frankly, I think he's a bit over-thought if that makes sense. Don't see in him what many others apparently do.

It depends who you talk to. In my inner circle and folks I go to watch fights with or go to each other’s houses for fights it’s mostly Mexicans so he is well respected and thought of.

In general I think a lot of folks appreciate him but there’s a sentiment that he simply “had Pacquaio’s number” which may be true but sells him short. He had a great career outside of Pacquaio and was supremely talented. He was overlooked and ducked in his 20s but then unified at 126 beat some good competition like Medina, Salido, Gainer fought against all styles and opponents. He beat Barrera who was on a great run (though past his best despite being younger slightly) and unified at lightweight with an excellent KO of Casamayor. He then turned back two tough challengers a decade younger than him in Diaz and Katsidis. All these wins he was dominant and he often beat guys far more convincingly than others.

Marquez never had the establishment behind him in the manner Canelo does and even Morales and Barrera did (they weren’t matched with the variety of styles Marquez was) but the cream rose to the top and he’s the best Mexican post-Chavez.

I love watching him fight.imo Better than Morrales and nearly on a par with those that beat him.
Unlucky to peak when he did.imo.

He’s my favorite boxer of all-time. I had the pleasure of seeing him live 11 times and met him on a number of occasions. I went to Romanza gym once and saw him training out here in LA and not only is he a great fighter but he’s a really nice person. He’s a credit to the sport.

I’ll post the photos when I get a chance from Romanza gym and before the first Juan Diaz fight in his hotel suite the night before the fight. He was so relaxed and even then you could tell it was the Pacquaio fight that was his passion.

Not as much as before. He slowly had to build his name up while being in the shadows of Morales and Barrera. These days you'll see people call him as one of the best Mexican boxers of all time, which shows how hard he had to work his way up to finally be more recognized, thanks to his fights with Pacquiao. Great fighter and also one of my favorites to watch.
