Julio Cesar Chavez Sr vs Floyd Mayweather Jr @135

I want to pick Chavez but I don’t think I can. I believe Floyd would edge a decision although I wished I didn’t.

Floyd’s handspeed will trouble Chavez every bit as much as Taylor did, throw in his defense and counterpunching and I think Floyd edges a close decision.

 

Ya'll must of forgot Floyd had a broken hand the first Castillo fight.

This is razor close either way - Floyd does just enough clever boxing to get a tight decision or Chavez just outworks Floyd for a tight decision, nobody is KO'ing anybody here, it goes the full 12.

 

I think Chavez on points in a close fight. Castillo really only outhustled May in the second half when Floyd wasn’t busy enough. Against Chavez, Floyd would have to up his work rate substantially. But I think JCC would be on him continuously. Unless Floyd decided to put punches together like Meldrick Taylor, then Chavez would be too busy for him, I think.

 

Mayweather

 

And classifying Mayweather as a guy who was barely better than Castillo is a terrible way to analyze this.

 

I'll go with Chavez in this one. Mayweather never faced a fighter as capable as prime Chavez, but Chavez faced some while not as talented as Mayweather, were not that far from him in Camacho, Smith, Taylor ,and Mayweatherjr's uncle, Rodger. No one knows what Mayweather would've done under serious pressure from a fighter as talented as Chavez. He never had to prove his toughness against ATG talent in their prime. Hell, would he have even gotten in the ring against superior talent in their primes is a legitimate question, especially how he maneuvered around Pac for yrs until he was damaged goods( coincidence? Unlikely. ) I see Chavez grinding Mayweather Jr down the 2nd half of the fight , forcing Mayweather Jr to go on survival mode , cruise on to a unanimous dec.

 

I'm interested in what your analysis of this fight is and why you think Mayweather wins. Not that I strongly disagree - I can see scenarios where Mayweather wins - just interested to hear your analysis of the fight.

 

Chavez UD

 

He was just just a better fighter. I can't really name any elite athletic boxer/cutie types that Chavez fought at 135. But when he went to 140, he struggled with Taylor, lost to Randall, and should've lost to Whitaker. I feel like if Chavez were capable of beating Mayweather, then Canelo should've had field day with the 36 year old version.

 

You lost your argument when you compared that roided up, gift decision getting fake red headed great to Chavez.

 

Chavez was losing to Willie Wise at that age. You can continue hating today's fighters in order to glorify the past though, fine with me. I'm sure Chavez never had any good fortune in big fights.

 

Chavez had had twice as many fights as Floyd at that age, without taking any extended breaks as Floyd did either.
Chavez doesn’t need rose coloured glasses or hating on the new guys to be glorified, his record and the footage speaks for itself. He was as good as it gets for a long time,a masterful box/fighter. Far better than Alvarez h2h and p4p with all due respect to Canelo.
As great as Floyd is he’s not that great that a fighter of Chavez’s ability wouldn’t trouble him either. No one is that great.

 

Chavez's win column was padded with bums. Mayweather was fighting world class ams before maturing, not 50 TJ cab drivers.

 

Comparing Giftnelo Alverez to Chavez is frankly an insult.

 

The strange part is that Canelo got some close calls in his favor, but the only true gift belongs to Chavez (Whitaker fight).
