McDonnell was hardly a mug, and the two fighters who beat him in his prime (Mitchell and Nelson) are among the best ever at the weight. He gave them both a pretty good fight, although the Nelson fight effectively finished him as a top level fighter as he ended up taking a lot of punishment by the end.

Without wishing to labour the point, if Martinez or Quigg level fighters were holding titles in that era, McDonnell would probably have been able to pick up a strap or two. Mitchell and Nelson were obviously better fighters than Frampton (as well as bigger), and if McDonnell can give them a fight he'd surely have a chance of beating Frampton. Against Warrington, Frampton was outhustled by a bigger, light-punching fighter with exceptional stamina and workrate, which has obvious parallels with McDonnell. I'd probably fancy a peak Frampton to beat McDonnell, but it's not an easy fight to call by any stretch.

McGuigan was over the hill anyway by the time he fought McDonnell, and never looked the same fighter in his comeback. Even then, it was a cut-eye stoppage so it's not like he was blown away by McDonnell.

One more time... I did not type that stuff ok? It’s random garbage. I accept you probably didn’t either. I can’t explain it.

Excellent post. I didn’t think Mitchell was great myself personally. I certainly wouldn't rule out frampton beating Mitchell. On the other hand I’m very certain peak mcguigan would have murdered McDonnell. The cut prevented Barry from getting into the fight. He was a slow started who frequently lost the early rounds of fights, even fights he went on to win handily. Barry came into his own in the second half of fights, when his body shots started to take their toll and his work rate, engine and relentless pressure took over. Many could outbox Barry over 6 or 8 rounds, but few could live with peak McGuigan over 15.
