    Yutaka Niida vs Roman Gonzalez

Gonzalez wins the minimum weight title in a brilliant offensive display. He looks much larger and stronger than Niida. The only flaw I see is that he gets a little careless with his left defensively getting hit a little more than he needs to but Niida just can’t exploit it due to the pressure and punch variety Gonzalez brings. Ref stops it after the doctor looks at Niida.

Gonzalez TKO 4 up 30-27 on the cards.

Khaokor Galaxy vs Wilfredo Vazquez Sr.

SD fight and I have no confidence in my card. I have 7 close rounds and scored it 1 rd wider than the widest judge. 2 strong guys hammering away at each other in the lighter weights. I just felt that Khaokor outboxed Wilfredo and landed the cleaner better punches. But rounds 4/7-11 were very difficult to score.

    Galaxy 116-111 on mine
115-112 and 115-113 Galaxy for 2 of the judges the 3rd had it Vazquez 114-113...I may need to rescore this again. Decent fight if you have not seen it.

    Wilfredo Vazquez vs Orlando Canizales

Not a great fight but a pretty decent tactical boxing match. I felt like Orlando gave this fight away by coasting or taking to long to engage during the first 3 round. Lederman and Merchant are at odds with Lederman thinking Canizales was in control by 4 pts and Merchant agreeing with the wide disparity in punch stats has Vazquez ahead. I fell in the middle and felt there were 4 difficult to score rounds....I watched a completely different fight than Harold Lederman it would seem.

Not an exciting fight as evidenced by the booing crowd lol....but some good strategic boxing takes place here.

114-114 draw on my card. I could see 116-112 for either guy based on my 4 close rounds. Gut feeling overview....it seemed Vazquez landed the better shots and Orlando the quicker combinations and I felt like Vazquez won despite my draw card.

Saoul Mamby vs Esteban de Jesus

Decent technical fight, that lacked some of the energy I was hoping for. The fight starts slow with DeJesus outworking Mamby, and winning the inside exchanges. Mamby does not fight like the taller longer man and would be served by using the jab that his corner is instructing him to use more. By the 4th Esteban slows down even more and Mamby picks up the pace. By the 5th to the 7th Mamby is using his jab more and controlling the range like he should. It is a fairly clinical clear (not wide) win by Mamby from the 4th rd on. DeJesus is competitive in the 9th and 10th but not enough so to win anymore rounds. Mamby drops him with under 10 left in the 12th. In the 13th DeJesus is about 10 seconds late coming off of his stool, and looks like he has not recovered....he has not 15-20 unanswered shots and he is down again it is all over!

    RBR
    1-3 DeJesus
    4-12 Mamby with 12 being a 10-8 rd

Mamby by TKO 13 up 117-110 on my card

Paulie Ayala vs Johnny Tapia I

Hard to believe it has been 20 years! But this still stands the test of time IMO as one of the great slugfests of all time! Awesome fight, you must watch if you have not seen it before!

I hate joe Cortez yet he does perhaps his best work ever in this fight. It looked like things could get dirty early, with Tapia shoving Ayala during introductions and all. But Cortez maintained order and didn’t let things get out of control. Awesome job by him here.

Every round in this fight was close so I won’t break them down....you can score every round the exact opposite of me and I won’t argue a bit. One of the hardest to score fights I have watched.

114-114 a Draw for me! Ayala won on all 3 cards and one by 3 pts so they must have been swayed more than me! Either way this is a fun brutal slugfest! Must watch for boxing fans!

Paulie Ayala vs Johnny Tapia II

15 months later and we are back where we left off! Not quite as good as the first encounter but a very good fun fight on its own.

Richard Steele did a great job as ref controlling the action.

The negative—-of course the biased commentary of showtime! Tapia is putting on a clinic about 30 times,...controlling dominating etc. Paulie looks fatigued tired frustrated discouraged...this was a...:I don’t want to say the word,...lol they were bad!

This was a close hard to score fight....neither guy put on a clinic except both of them in toughness! A shame that biased commentary ruins another close competitive fight!

Arturo Gatti vs Micky Ward I

It has been a while and outside of the decision it did not disappoint. A gutsy performance by Ward but being generous the best I see for him is a draw, and I have no clue how he won by 2 pts?

Gatti sweeps the first 3 rounds through....boxing! His defense outside of his head movement and reflexes is about as poor as I have seen in top notch fighter and makes Meldrick Taylor seem like a defensive wiz. In the 4th more of the same, but closer and this time Gatti is docked a pt for a low blow after being warned in rd 2....to me he continued doing this but not as bad as the one in 4 and he was fortunate not to lose another pt. Ward comes on and takes the 5th inside and against the ropes. 6-7 Gatti back to boxing and while his defense sucks he stil has more skill than Ward and takes them. Round 8 Ward takes it inside hard again and Gatti looks spent. In 9 Ward lands a body shot from hell that puts Gatti down. After about 20 unanswered punches Gatti manages to fire back and survive the round. Round 10 Gatti digs deep and outboxes and outlands Ward the entire rd.

    RBR
    1 Gatti
    2 Gatti
    3 Gatti
    4 Gatti 9-9
    5 Ward
    6 Gatti
    7 Gatti
    8 Ward
    9 Ward 10-8
    10 Gatti

Gatti 95-93 on my card and I really can’t see any better than a draw for Ward. I would have been happy with a draw, but I didn’t like this decision.

Arturo Gatti vs Micky Ward II

Good fight but not quite as good as the first fight. Ward seemed to have a horrible plan. In the first fight his jab was nonexistent in this fight he has developed a heavy jab but very slow predictable and one dimensional. Gatti is able to use his own jab better than the first fight and time and counter wards. Ward brings some pressure throughout the fight, but not intelligently or intense enough to win rounds. Gatti just outboxes him all night and Ward being a limited boxer seems content to make it a boxing match where he is outclassed rather than turning the pressure up and making this an
In close brawl. Good fight but the skill is not great and detracts just a little.

    RBR
    1-10 Gatti with 3 a 10-8 rd

    100-89 Gatti

Over 20 rounds I have Gatti up 17-3 and 195-182

Arturo Gatti vs Micky Ward III

All 3 fights are great in and of themselves but it falls just short of a great trilogy because I really feel it was pretty onesided. Although the judges had it 2-1 Ward I had it 3-0 Gatti and really only scored 5 rounds out of 30 for Ward although 2 of them were 10-8 rounds.

Gatti again outboxes Ward for the first 3 rounds. In the 4th Ward turns it up and makes it the fight he needs it to be. I am not sure if it was Ward or his half brother or both who thought he had a chance to outbox Gatti rather than outslug him. Gatti hurts his hand a 2nd time in the 4th or 5th and becomes a one armed fighter for 2-3 rounds. In the 6th Ward drops Gatti and although I almost scored it 10-9 Ward because I felt Gatti won the rd....but I ended up going 10-8 Ward but wrestled with it. 7-10 Gatti digs deep and rather than just outjab him he uses his right and out lands and outfights him.

    RBR
    1 Gatti
    2 Gatti
    3 Gatti
    4 Ward
    5 Gatti
    6 Ward 10-8
    7 Gatti
    8 Gatti
    9 Gatti
    10 Gatti

    Gatti 97-92 on my card
    Gatti 3-0 in the series
    Gatti 25-5 in rounds
    Gatti 292-274

Some good fights but again not a great trilogy IMO

I liked 1 the best 3 next and the 2nd as my third favorite.

Lots of good rounds but about 7 of them are round of the year worthy

    I rds 3 & 9
    2 rds 3 & 10
    3 rds 3-4 & 6

Edwin Rosario vs Frankie Randall I

Fun little 10 round lightweight fight. Randall looks larger and stronger and works good behind a solid jab. Rosario the quicker better counter puncher able to string punches together in combination a little more effectively. Randall does well but seems to have conditioning and stamina issues down the stretch leaving the door open for Rosario to take a decision. And Rosario walks through the door on the refs card and mine. The fight Dr. Is not at his worst but still a poor commentator.

Decent fight to watch if you have not seen it....not quite great but fun nonetheless

Leave it to our British friends to complicate scoring rounds even more by introducing fractions.

Rosario 98-971/2 on my card and 98 1/2-98 on the refs.

Frankie Randall vs Edwin Rosario II

What a difference 8 years can make! A prime Rosario from the first fight becomes a soft heavier slower declined and past prime warrior. The pre prime underconditioned Randall has become a quick strong fighter into his own prime. The quickness and countering of Rosario from the first fight is only evident in brief flashes. Randall is now the bigger stronger guy as well as the quicker younger and better conditioned fighter.

This is almost all Randall outside of a few flashes by Rosario but nothing close to winning the round. Randall gives a boxing clinic and outside of one careless lapse in concentration where he is dropped in round 2 this is his night.

Round 2 Randall drops Rosario and I figure this can’t go much longer.....and then Rosario drops Randall with 10 seconds left and it looks like we got a fight.

Instead what we got was a resilient gutsy performance from Rosario in even making it through the 5th. And of course a great boxing lesson from Randall!

    RBR
Not necessary! Outside of the dual knockdown round 2 scored 10-10, this was all Randall!

    60-56 Randall before the stoppage.

Y'know, I never saw this fight when it took place. Didn't know it was out there, so thanks for bringing it up. You are right, Rosario is waaaay past his best, but it was still an entertaining fight. Rosario's punch could always turn a fight around.

    Round 1: 10-9 Randall
Round 2: 10-9 Randall (dual knockdowns cancel each other, but Randall carried the heavy freight throughout the round)
    Round 3: 10-9 Randall
    Round 4: 10-9 Randall
    Round 5: 10-9 Randall
    Round 6: 10-9 Randall
Round 7: Fight stopped in Randall's favor

Total (through 6 completed rounds): 60-54 Randall

Randall was not to be denied.

    GGG vs Danny Jacobs

Getting ready for Álvarez vs Jacobs and thought I would rewatch and rescore this one.

A decent technical fight, sometimes we lose sight of how skilled GGG is as a boxer due to his power but he is highly skilled with a jab on par with many greats. A powerful jab!

But to me this was a close back and forth fight with GGG seeking to impose his will and Jacob’s corner looking to impose his skill. If Jacobs has listened better and fought more disciplined he could have won this fight.

Jacobs size, height, length and strength along with his superior IMO skills frustrated GGG and made him more one dimensional than previous opponents. Yet GGG kept stalking and forcing the fight enough for a split in rounds on my card with the 4th rd KD sealing the win for GGG.

The judges had it 115-112 GGG on 2 cards and 114-113 on the other. I think they did a good job and you could argue realistically a 3 pt GGG win to a 1 Pt Jacobs win. I think there were 6 close rounds that could be swing votes. I had four rds different from Harold Lederman but evened out by 2-2 for each guy.

    Good fight.

    Dmitry Pirog vs Danny Jacobs

A fun short fight to watch.

Jacobs slightly busier out of the gate edges a feeling out round. Round 2 Jacobs goes to the ropes and seemingly gets dropped? Not ruled a KD but I do agree with Lederman that it should have. Pirog showing nice power and good movement.

Danny’s corner tells him to stay of the ropes and box Pirog and back him up. For 3-4 Danny does just that and wins both rounds.

Danny is up 39-37 on my card and the 3 judges...round 5 Danny goes to the ropes and gets KO’d!
