Neither do I. If you find who “Bear Cartwright” is, that would be helpful. He certainly never fought Micky Walker that’s for sure.

“Bearcat Wright” however was pretty decent. During his career, Wright defeated such men as Jack Johnson, Sam Langford, Dan "Porky" Flynn, James "Tut" Jackson, Brad Simmons, "Big" Bill Hartwell, Roy "Ace" Clark, Cecil "Seal" Harris, Neil Clisby and "Long" Tom Hawkins. this was the guy Micky Walker beat.

Bro i never said cruiserweights cant have punching power. We were discussing the possibility of a smaller man beating a quality opponent 40 lbs heavier. So i brought up a perfectly valid example of golovkin, an elite 160 pounder, vs Marko Huck a decent B level cruiserweight.

Choklab, in typical choklab faction, not only said he believed Golovkin could possibly win that fight he had the audacity to bring the the example of Harry Greb, a 170 pound fighter beating a 210 pound fighter. On paper that sounds impressive but the catcher is the opponent was Al Benedict, a guy with a losing record who had been KO'd 27 times and had a pitiful 18% knockout rate.

Even if you think Rocky could win this fight you have to admit this is a pretty bogus example to use to support your argument!

55 pages of rock-em sock-em drama! This might be better than the fight! We've been having it, guys :)

It's more than the size argument here because Greb beat Bill Brennan senseless at least two times. It's a STYLE argument. Facefirst powerpunchers, who in their best performances relied on attrition, do not fare well against much larger powerpunchers. Greb was shifty on his feet and fast as lightning. Marciano was, well, neither.

Exactly. Its the size difference plus the clash of styles. If marciano were a slick elusive fighter like Roy jones or a cagey defensive boxer like Whittaker id agree he'd have a chance of beating foreman since he always struggled with those types.

A short aggresive volume puncher plays right into Foreman's hands--literally. The size difference only makes it worse.

Foreman feasted on those types of fighters all throughout his career. But people just ignore every example and think Rocky will just defy all the odds and stats and make it a 50/50 fight somehow

Ben Cartwright might have a chance, especially if he can have his 3 sons helping him.

Have not seen you here since April 30th. Just to clarify, Louis had something close to 100 boxing exhibitions in the army to keep him sharp. It was not like he sat out of boxing for years.

George Foreman knocks out Marciano worse than Mike Tyson knocked out Marvis Frazier.

This. I still find it hilarious that people think it’s impossible for Marciano to even last a few rounds with or beat Foreman despite Foreman being a sucker for right hands (Marciano’s best punch) and Foreman’s history of going negative once guys start tearing him up from all angles on the inside, which is another thing that Marciano did very well. Also, the only people to go over 8 rounds with Foreman in his prime besides Young were two sub 200 lb fighters, which were Forte and Peralta. Marciano also tended to come in around 190 or a little over when he fought heavier fighters that might try and maul him on the inside.

Here is Jimmy Young discussing his fight with Foreman.

"The key to any victory is to outthink the other man," Young had warned. "Whether it's in combat, shooting craps or playing chess. And there's no heavyweight alive I can't outthink. No matter how strong a man is—and a lot are stronger than me—well, I always say there isn't a horse that can't be broken or a man who can't be thrown."

“Young set out to do the obvious. Knowing that Foreman had never gone more than 10 rounds in his career (and only twice since 1970 had gone as many as 10), and having seen Big George exhausted and arm weary so often after three, four, five rounds, Young began to use him up, making those big, heavy arms work against empty space.”

Jimmy Young discussing changing his style after getting stoped by Shavers

You'd think I'd have known better," Young says, "but I've never lacked for confidence. I actually wanted that fight; I was eager. I thought I was going to win. I guess I was overmatched. That same night Ernie Terrell was fighting the main event against some stiff. I can't remember his name. I should have been fighting Terrell's guy, and he should have been fighting Shavers. His guy went out in one round; Shavers stopped me in three. It wasn't a knockout; they just stopped it. All he did was bloody my nose."

The loss sent Young to the movies. "I realized that standing there and letting the other guy pound me wasn't the answer. I had the brains; I decided to use them. I studied films of all the old stylists: Sugar Ray Robinson, Archie Moore, Jersey Joe Walcott, Billy Conn. I idolized them all, mostly Sugar Ray. I still study the films every day; I'm still learning new tricks from the old masters of the sport."

I also still don’t get the Frazier-Marciano comparison. Frazier when in great shape was quick and had a beautiful left hook, but in the 70’s Frazier was rarely in great shape and it showed. Marciano on the other was always in shape and had a great right hand and was wise enough to quit when he wasn’t willing to make the necessary sacrifices to be top dog anymore.

Very interesting post. Jimmy Young was a clever man.

    I have a question tho.

When did Rocky become a 6'2 213 genius counter puncher who fought on the outside and made his opponents miss with elusive footwork, head slipping, and parrying?

Oh he didn't? He didn't fight anything like Jimmy Young and didnt resemble him in the slightest physically or technique-wise?

Then stop using Jimmy Young as an example to make your case.

Hilarious, people are saying Frazier/Marciano is a bad comparison but he has more in common with Jimmy Young. Just change this entire thread title to "intellectual dishonesty".

What similarities do you see between Forte , Peralta and Marciano? Personally I can't think of any.

Very amusing. At what point did @Jackomano pretend “ Rocky was a 6’2” genius counter puncher who fought on the outside and made his opponents miss with elusive footwork, head slipping, and parrying?“ dare I stoop so low as to claim It is intellectually dishonest to pretend somebody said this whilst ignoring legitimate quotes like the one below:

Absolutely. However there is a movement of people who seem so desperate to preserve a ridiculous notion that it’s impossible for Marciano to even last a few rounds with or beat Foreman despite Foreman being a sucker for right hands (Marciano’s best punch).

This is an extremely legitimate point but something Rockophobes are traditionally always desperate to avoid tackling. It is something they need to believe in order to remain so adamant about Marcianos simple obliteration in this match up. It can’t be a hard fight. A close fight. Only absolute annihilation without breaking a sweat. Rocky is not allowed to do as well as Jose Roman. Nothing else will do.

That’s right. When all else fails use the ID card... my oh my.

I agree, lemon pepper goes great on red meat. Personally, I prefer sprinkling it on before I put the meat on the grill (with a dash of black pepper and onion powder).
