The one and only joe Louis on Jack dempsey, " I think he's the greatest heavyweight of all times "..1968
Morris demanded to be paid in advance for the bout then fell at the first, light punch. He seemed fine immediately afterward. All this from an extensive, local next day report.
Dempsey said himself that the shot he hit Morris with to the gut was probably the hardest punch he delivered, which he followed up with a hard right. And the AP reported that Morris was unconscious for 4 full minutes after the fight.
Funny. How does someone go "unconscious" for 4 minutes from a body shot? In the much longer, much more thorough account of the fight to be found in the Picayune on the next day, here are some observations... "One punch- a left hook to the solar plexus- and a gentle left hook at that- brought Morris' six feet and more of beef crumpling to a quivering heap..." "Cries of 'Fake' 'Police' 'Jail the big tramp' and the like greeted Morris... He didn't seem to mind the scornful jeers at all, nor did he seem disappointed at his speedy annihilation." "(Dempsey) intended to show his wares to New Orleans fans... and never had dreamed the lady-like left hook would spell such a speedy end to the affair." "What caused a more bitter feeling against Morris was the news of his 'hold up' of the promoters for his guarantee before he would put foot in the ring... Personally, Morris counted the money to see that it was all there... 'You seem to be in a mighty big hurry,' said Promoter Tortorich. Morris, sullen, said nothing, but finished counting his money and then handed it to Ike Dorgan, his representative." "Whatever else might be said about the big scrap, the fact remains Morris seemed unhurt after a few minutes and kept in close touch with Ike Doran (who was holding his money)"
They fought 3 consecutive times .Dempsey had easily won the first 2 ,why would he need Morris to take a dive in the 3rd one?I don't get the logic.
Morris didnt take a dive. He wanted the money upfront because he was worried that promoter not paying him by getting knocked out so soon. Not giving customers their moneys worth
They probably go unconscious from the follow up right hand to the chin as Dempsey stated. And even if this overly dramatised sounding account is true, contrary to the account in the Associated Press, then how is that on Dempsey anyway? He didn’t take the dive and having soundly beaten Morris twice previously it’s ridiculous to think he’d have needed to pay him to go into the tank. You may as well sh1t can Mike Tyson for the Bruce Seldon fight.
That doesn't make logical sense seeing that he had already gone a complete 4 rounds against Dempsey and then 6 before getting DQ'd for low blows. The odds are he took a dive. Those that were there for the whole proceedings certainly think so. Morris was notoriously unreliable. This really isn't a besmirching of Dempsey but of Morris as a quality opponent... and his opinion being worth any integrity.
You really can’t knock a solid prediction one way or the other here. A strong claim for Dempsey would be as logical as one for Rocky. I don’t think anyone would see it as an easy fight either way. Dempsey was a great fighter too.
If he quit ,who is to blame for that? Dempsey hated Morris who was a complete ass wipe, Jack was said to have carried him in one fight so he could punish him more. I think it would be one of , and quite possibly the greatest slugfest of all time.
The Carl Morris fight lasted a few seconds and no one ringside had the benefit on any television replay. When a fight lasts a few seconds, the paying customers in the cheap seats (who obviously expected more for their money) are generally going to feel cheated and cry "FAKE". Who knows ? No one here knows.
Joe Jeannette was said to have been carried unconscious to his dressing room after being hit low by Jack Johnson.
