If Jeffries had taken on Shavers as a challenger for his title ?
Does Jeffries iron chin take the best shots of Earnie ,or would Shavers make JJJ another ko victim .?
    Modern day rules a n gloves ,15,rounds .

Jefferies could take away Earnies one advantage, power.

I think that the smart money would be on Jeffries to stop Shavers after some rough moments.

Fitz had light gloves, and there were no mouth guards back then. With that said, he might have hit harder than Shavers who fought with 10 or 12 oz gloves.

Shavers was not bigger. He was shorter and lighter.

My best guess is Jeffries wins inside of 6 rounds. Shaver's a favorite of mine growing up and a trifecta of Achilles heals. He gassed. He didn't take a good punch, and he cut too easy. But that power was something. Underrated hand speed too. However he could not hurt Tex Cobb, and I'm not sure if he Ko'd anyone ranked in the top ten who took a good punch.

Shavers Lyle Tua & Cleveland Williams all vastly overrated on here. None of them ever beat a great fighter and that trend should continue in hypotheticals against other great level fighters. I don’t get the fascination with these 4 good contenders.

Jeff's lack of ring IQ, defense, and barroom brawling tendencies play into shavers' hands. Unless Jeff manages to crack shavers on the jaw and force a stoppage. More often than not, Jeff ends up with a face covered in blood and looking like a half eaten plate of lasagna.

Jeff is obviously more accomplished and had better endurance but the ref might have to save him from himself.

Lack of ring IQ? You have no idea what you re talking about. Jeffries was a smart fighter, knowing when to up the ante, and had an under rated defense. To put into a frame you might understand, as an old man he made Jack Johnson miss quite a few times, but to learn that you'll need to read fight reports.

I read everything i could on jefferies including his gorey, bloody, barroom brawls with sharkey and fitzimmons--fights that would have been stopped today for their sheer brutality and career shortening qualities.

Entertaining stuff but nothing to convince me he was some amazing technician. By all means enlighten me if im wrong.

I already admitted he had better endurance and overall ability than shavers who was a 1 dimensional glass cannon. If he has a lenient ref and gets to shavers first the fight is his. But if he decides to just slug it out or gets careless shavers would tear his face to pieces

Everyone has to take some when fighting smaller faster opponents who match their reach.

Jeffries certainly didn't lack Ring IQ either.

What does that have to do with lack of Ring IQ you suggesting? Now you're switching your tune.

I don't think you have read much, Jeffries vs Fitz 1 was a relatively easy fight for Jeffries and Jeffries vs Sharkey 1, Jeffries came away in fine shape. The only really bad cut he has was vs Fitz, who might have done something to his gloves. I've never seen a photo of the cut. Like I told you Shavers had issues with cuts with modern better constructed gloves, and the paste like stuff to stop them.

Jeffries had his own style which included what made felt was the best-left hook ever seen decades past his retirement, tremendous body punching, Wrestling / clinching, and a slip and duck type of defense. Toward the end of his career, he became more of a technician.

Well I guess they were all punchers, with upset ability, but only one of them could really box, three had suspect chins, and the one who didn't have a suspect chin was just a terrible boxer.

hard to say Shavers was KO'd by Ron Stander and lost to Bob Stallings, I think even some of Jeffries worse critics would say he was far better than those 2........but a well timed punch by Shavers dropped and stopped many including Ken Norton and Holmes,Lyle, Young but Shavers was also Ko'd by Quarry in 1, Lyle in 5 (dropping Lyle) - Have to favor Jeffries as a top 15 ATG but Shavers always dangerous
