Obviously it's debatable. However, he is unquestionably Top 10.

so do I, but not for the same reasons you might.

I disagree because it is IMPOSSIBLE to accurately place top fighters in a pecking order so to speak.

I do agree you get the stand outs like Greb, SRR, Hagler and so on in all weights. BUT of a 150 years of Boxing greatness, the Great fighters can't be compared in a pecking order really, they are mostly as good as each other after those few gods and are then best thought of as AMONG the Greatest Fighter's at whatever weight and/or in History.

there are Hundreds of Greats, Hundreds.

Also, this is a Nineteen year old Steele, who wasn't even a middleweight.

He then won an immediate rematch over 6.

Overlin, Krieger, Risko x 3, Gorilla Jones x3, Lesnevich, Apostoli, Ceferino Garcia x2, Berglund...

Those are some pretty weak names indeed.

Incredibly weak I'd say. Not even any top 100 p4p fighters

Compare it to, say, Charley Burley or Teddy Yarosz

Not to mention Steele's reign was only 2 years long

Yarosz was beaten by Risko. Twice, I believe.

Yes, though Yarosz beat Risko once as well. Not that it's important, Yarosz was never the most consistent fighter. Still had terrific names, names Steele lacks.

Perhaps he should've fought Loughran. Or at least have other standout feats like a longer title reign or a long undefeated streak (he has undefeated streaks but they're nothing impressive.)

    Laughable.

Marciano's title reign was only 3 years, just about. Don't see that coming up from you, though.

And how long was Jersey Joe's?

4 years, and Marciano has his undefeated career, superior domination, size disadvantage average, and superior names on his resume.

That being said I'm not penalizing Steele for not having a long title reign, I'm simply saying it would be easier to make an argument for him if he had one. Longevity is one of the things I care least about in a fighter

I literally have many fighters who've never held a title in their life above Steele, such as Tommy Gibbons and Jimmy Bivins, simply because of their superior resume and other achievements, such as Gibbons' undefeated streak

Jersey Joe isn't in my top 10 heavies nor my top 100 p4p. Not to mention the top 10 Middleweights is much more competitive than the top 10 heavyweights. Dunno why 160 has so many greats but it does

Being pedantic, Marciano won the title on the 23rd September, 1952. His last bout was on 21st September, 1955. Basically 3 years.

And I'm curious to know what 10 men you seriously put above Steele?

Steele's resume is only unimpressive to you as you don't know the opponents very well. Steele also looks great on film. There is no question he is top 10.

Let's get 2 things out of the way before I post my top 10 Middleweights:

    1. I'm talking about when Marciano retired and the title was formally taken from him, in 1956.
    2. I don't care how good he looks on film, this is greatness, not H2H

Ok here you go, top 10 greatest middleweights, this list is only talking about feats at the 160lbs division, so don't expect people like RJJ or Fitzsimmons, who's best work was above that.

    1. Greb
    2. Hagler
    3. Monzon
    4. Ketchel
    5. Robinson
    6. LaMotta
    7. Burley
    8. Yarosz
    9. Fullmer
    10. I struggle here between Walker and Steele

Steele might be LOWER on my H2H list because I'd have to factor in monsters who were great in other weights but also had performances in 160, like Jones Jr, McClellan, Toney, Hopkins, Gibbons, etc.

GGG might sneak his way onto my top 11 as well

Yeah, I don't think Fullmer is above Steele either. Looking at the footage its clear Steele is a cut above Gene.

My controversial boxing opinions sacrifice another good conversation

Thank God I'm not into politics, or else I'd be a forced loner for life
