I'm sure the revenue stream is different than ppv so just because it's on a streaming app doesn't necessarily mean it didn't make money. I dunno. I mean I highly doubt the execs assume there will suddenly be an increase of boxing fans, normally a million viewers is not too shabby.
If you take into account the amount of people that would have signed up for a free month, the revenue from subscriptions is probably 10 million? If it did a 10 million gate as well then it isn't the worst outcome
There would've been more if they streamed in all countries - they don't in Australia. I also think they could do a better job with promo. HBO, Showtime and FOX could/can cross promote/advertise during dramas, comedies all other programing in fact and pull people in. DAZN don't have that but they can use youtube etc better. Those 30 - 40 minute featurettes need to be released earlier and they can do a panel show and podcast with ex and current fighters, managers, corner men etc. They also need to to do a waaaaaaay better job with production and commentary. Jim Lampley has a tonne of experience and even if you think his time on air has passed they could use his knowledge off screen which I think would help enormously. They have the right product and they're putting on a lot of fights that I want to see, they just need to make it look better, and...... they need to allow my sorry Australian a** to buy it.
Correct me if I’m wrong, I’m from uk I thought Canelo did them numbers on PPV anyway? But isn’t PPV like $70 in America or something high? But dazn is like $10? Am I missing something or isn’t this quite a disappointing stat?
Guy from germany speaking here. I can assure you that a lot of my friends would have watched the fight if it wouldnt be at 6 am in the morning. They like boxing but not as much too get up or stay awake to this hour. If they would be a little bit smarter with the time managment a lot more people would watch it.
Now it's $20 if you subscribe only for one month (so those subscribed for a year pay $10 and "casuals" pay $20). But you're right, that's significantly less than a "normal" PPV price in the US. And even those $20 is not for one fight but for all other fights in this month as well... But DAZN's idea is brave — we burn a ton of money now expecting it gets profitable in the future.
It's still a new-ish platform that the vast majority of people don't even know about. I think there's alot of potential in DAZN and I think they're looking at this long term not short term.
You're absolutely correct, my sister called me that they wanted to see the fight at her house but didn't know how to go about it. I had to explain to her step by step and was lucky she was able to download the app and make the necessary payment. Their's tons of households that didn't watch that wanted to, and would have had it been on regular ppv.
