Things looked awesome at the turn of the year, and even for a while after that. Wilder Fury had an awesome fight, it looked like they would do it again, and we had a strong Big 3 in the division that looked like they were going to face each other. Plus, one of the two best CWs of all time coming into the division to threaten to make it a Big 4. Now it's May. Wilder Fury is off, and doesn't look promising or at least assured to EVER happen. And the odds of AJ ever facing either of the other two don't look a ton better. All three have matches lined up against sub top 10 opponents. Usyk is hurt and his entry into the division delayed. This absolutely sucks. We've had eras where one or two overlapping great HWs don't face each other (Lewis Bowe, Frazier Norton), but it's looking increasingly likely than Fury Wilder 1 is the only fight the fight the big 3 will ever have against each other. It could turn what should be a great era into the most wasted era ever.
Even Klitschko era now starts to look good. Top tier: Wlad and Vitaly. Second tier: Haye, Byrd, Ibragimov, Chagaev, Valuev, Ruiz, Peter, Brewster, Lyakowitch, Briggs, Toney, Rahman, Maskaev, Thompson, Pulev, Gomez, Solis, Chisora. Current era Top tier: AJ, Fury, Wilder Second tier is one of the worst all time: Shpilka, old Povetkin, old Pulev, ancient Ortiz, Washington, Breazeale, Molina, Shwartz, Dupuah, Parker, Whyte, old Chisora.
Thats 10 years of contenders you tallied up for the Klitschko era and about 3-4 years of contenders tallied up for this era. Plus Toney , Briggs , Thompson , Maskaev and Ruiz were all pushing 40 during Wlds era. Plus Klitscko era means two guys on top who were never going to fight each other. Thats bad for a division. Rivalries and and top guys fighting top guys makes for a great era. Two of the top guys of this era have already fought. There's a good chance they will all fight. There was never a chance for the top guys fighting during Klitschko era
I actually think that Whyte will defeat him. Of course Wilders promoters will not let Whyte near him. Edit: Wilder is top tier in status and not H2H
There's a war on, these fights are casualties of it. Outside observers look at the money being refused, even by second tier opponents such as Ortiz or Kownacki and they think that fighters are losing ambition, but that's not it. There is a very finely balanced struggle ongoing for the largest boxing market in the world and no party wants to strengthen their opponents hand if they can avoid it. I don't think this will always be the case and I suspect we'll get at least Fury Wilder 2 next year, because it will be easier for the two networks whose business model includes PPV to do a deal and Fury retains value as an AJ opponent even should he lose a second fight. The refusal of the DAZN mega offer however may indicate that Haymon is completely invested in the existing network/PPV mix that he cannot allow any fight which will strengthen the alternative model. So that one may come down to either Wilder breaking ranks or AJ being persuaded to fight on Showtime. That may be a complex conversation. One suggestion I have is to reject the arbritrary 'big 3' label. The fact is that all three are flawed in their own way. Wilder is technically poor, lost the Staples fight and is less than the sum of his padded record. Fury is not the genius he purports to be, lacks power at the top level and may struggle to maintain a professional lifestyle over the medium / long term. Joshua is the best, but has shown questionable stamina and a lack of fluency. So look below those three, we have Usyk, vast potential, Whyte who is tough as old boots and has a dangerous left that could cause anyone trouble, so maybe its a big 5? Then there's lots of upcoming talent who may soon be a force, Hrjovic, Ajagba, Dubois, Gorman, Joyce etc. It's not all bad news!
remember when people were saying the klitschko era was garbage and then once they were gone it would turn around? funny how its even worse now.
Ok OP your over-reacting here a little . The division is not crashing or burning . Problem is we have no clear direction of getting the fights we want . Now I accept that we will never get a Joshua V Wilder unless certain criteria is met , that still does not mean the division is burning . We have some good fights coming up ones which could be considered trap fights , particularly (Wilder Breazeale) . Another problem is Fury is gonna retire soon , his depression is back again so his career is on a short timer . I never put Fury top 3 , why does everyone do this with Fury . He has never defended anything and his ability to actually commit to a boxing career is questionable . People are relying on Fury and Wilder which is why your disappointed with the division , this says a lot . Wilder (WBC,PBC) has no intention of fighting either Joshua , Whyte or any other foreign based fighter especially when only the WBC is in the states . Fury could wake up tomorrow and jack it all in (would not surprise me) and I said this when I first came onto this forum .
The deal is there isn't a dominant heavyweight in this era and unless someone comes out of nowhere and destroys fury, wilder and joshua then it will be seen as it was in the 50's. Wilder who is literally a one punch fighter who is arguably in the top 3 worst heavyweight champions skill wise in history lost to Fury who himself was roided up against Klitschko and won and came back from his forced retirement where he got to 400 pounds and was a former drug and alcohol addict but of course the WBC couldn't lose their american hold on the belt so they robbed Fury. Joshua who is an average fighter with was sent to the floor by an old Klitschko who could have won but let him off the hook. Joshua's next fight was supposed to be a literal 320 pound fighter who was being pumped with hgh, epo and wd-30 whatever you call it and had no respect for himself or his opponent and who replaces him? another obese fighter who gloats about getting his chocolate and caramel nutrients from snickers and makes a mockery out of boxing. The rest of the fighters are giant stiff oafs or more undisciplined overweight adults who belong out of the ring and doing something else. I've made topics about this before but again how does the US have over 320,000,000 people and there is not ONE genuine skilled heavyweight fighter who trains hard and actually isn't a coward? Jack Dempsey at 187 pounds malnourished like he was during the Willard fight would have done the same thing to all the rest of these fighters like he did to Willard and would have retired all of them. You don't even have to bring Mike Tyson into the discussion because he would have given them a worse beating. And people are still in denial that boxing is dead in the US, sorry guys it is and it will be until we get that one special fighter who bites down on his mouthpiece and could not give a crap about instagram and twitter and acting like a fool in the streets.
a lot of good prospects who just need a good push and the division could be great. Hrgovic, Dychko, Ajagba, Makhmudov, Yoka etc. Although there's a lack of top fights which really sucks the British scene has been heating up lately. Reminds me of the 00s.
